I have a sqeaky belt in my 6.0 liter diesel. (39,000miles) My belt looks to be in good condition. Any suggestions? Should I try a silicone spray or is that just temporary? I was told to spray a rag with brake cleaner and wipe the belt down, but wont that harm the belt? I once had a gas Ford pick-up and Ford actually had a grease for there sqeaking belts.
I tryed the search link and didn't get to far.
The serpentine belts in my experience don't like belt dressings. Sprays like silicone and WD40 just hide the problem and make it worse over time. Belt dressing seems to work OK on V belts but it has been a long time since I had one of those.
With serpentines, it seems the problem is slippage on the shiney surfaces of the pulleys and idlers. What I do is clean the surfaces with alcohol or brake cleaner. I might roughup the surfaces with sand paper or steelwool.
If the belt is galzed it will squeal. You might be able to clean it with alcohol or maybe brake cleaner. You don't want to soak the belt in brake cleaner sine I think it will eat the rubber over time.
I just got out of the shop with the same problem. Mine would only squeak when cold. Turned out it was the idler pulley. It was covered in the 100,000 mi warranty. The tech also threw on a new belt.
