My instrument panel all of a sudden stopped working. No fuel gauge, speedometer, tach etc. All the lights still work but no readings. I believe I checked all the fuses my manual showed might be the problem but they seemed to be fine. I also showed some relays but the way things were written I wasn't sure if any of them might be the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
If your pickup has automatic over drive does the button to take it out of over drive work? How about timed headlights? Those two items are on the same circuit as power for the instrument cluster. It is a 5 amp fuse but I don't remember which position either 19 or 29 I think. I have this same problem and I can replace the fuse and it will work for a while then blow again. It has done this since I had the blower motor replaced under warrenty. I think there is a pinched wire causing a short to ground. I'm going to try and take the dash off this weekend and find the short. If I can't I'm going to try and wire a separate feed to just the instrument cluster.
Yes, the fuse that runs the instrument cluster, timed lighting, and overdrive button are all powered by fuse 29. Mine was blowing repeatedly and I did discover the problem. What I found is the over drive button wiring was dragging over the hinge point of the shift lever so every time the lever was moved the wires rubbed. This finally wore through the insulation on the wires causing a short. It has been a problem for the past 5 years. Sometimes the fuse would blow right away and sometimes it would go for a while without blowing. You'll have to remove the trim on the steering column to find the wires but it may be your problem if you have automatic overdrive. I did find the the wiring can be unplugged on the side of the column under the dash as well. This won't fix the overdrive button but will keep the panel from being shorted out. There are 3 wires and they are very tiny, probably 20 gauge. Good Luck
