Look in my gallery. I have a 4000 rpm tach. The gallery shows it in the dash and a close up. It is avail from JCWhitney called "Illuminated 4000-RPM Electronic Tachometer" for $66.96. Has 3 & 3/8 face, 100 rpm increments, and 270 degree sweep. It is a Datcon. Datcon and SW make tachs with many different rpm maxs, call Fuel Systems in Wisconsin at 262-781-4353 as they sell both Datcon and SW in various sizes too. Only thing, my Datcon's lighting is poor as is the 6K Autometer tach I bought from JEGS, but the El Cheapo 24$ 8K tach I bought from JC Whitney is nice and bright--go figure. Still, if I had it do to over I'd get the Datcon or maybe an SW, but I don't know what their lighting is like.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 04:05 PM (EST)]I originally wanted a 4000 RPM tach, too. At the time I think I could only find the Datcon's for about $100. Another issue that crept up was the compatibility of tachs with the MSD ignition signal. Maybe Datcons can handle it, but to be sure I went with an Autometer.
But if your ignition isn't a concern, and the tachs are only $66, I'd say hold out for a 4000 RPM tach - I still wish I had one.
For 80-86 guys, the F600 and up run a 4500 RPM tach on gas engines unlike the 6000 rpm unit on pickups... Although, my 'ol 300 would use up every bit of the 6000 rpm unit...

Mine, with a 350cfm 2BBL, would get shifted at 5500 every time. It STILL PULLS at that rpm. No worries, tho- it's a forged crank, and everything else is new.
Mine has a Clifford 290H, Hedman hedders, 1.94/1.60 SBC valves, lotsa headwork, 9.1:1 compresssion, forged crank, and, the last time it was re-built, I set it up to handle 30 PSI of boost, ARP studs throughout the bottom end, forged pistons, you name it, even have a 2.02/1.60(Took ALOT of work to get them in there) valved low compression head for it, 7.5:1 with that bad boy...
At one point in it's many configurations, I was known to wind it up to 7000 rpm...

These 300s have got to sound pretty wild turning 6 and 7 thousand. My bored out muffler really starts to sound sweet when I put her in the mid to upper 3000s. I think the key to a good sounding engine is CUBIC INCHES per cylinder. I bet a 4 banger with big jugs would sound great too.
