I just replaced the alternator on my 99 Expy because the bearings were bad and it had no output.
With 101k, I'm not surprised the bearings went bad, I'm wondering if it may have burned out because of an amp and subwoofer my stepson recently installed. He's added a Rockford Fosgate P4004 and MTX Thunder speakers that have a max output of 1500 watts. Since it is only a 130 amp alternator (there wasn't any bigger available) and rated max at only 1400 Watts, I'm concerned this one is going to burn up to. I looked at the data on the alternator and the max output occurs at max engine rpm. Idling or normal driving its only putting out about 1000 Watts.
My question is, does he need to install something else to help power the amp and subwoofer, or can the Expy power the system as factory built.
i had the stock alt. 130 amps in my last two trucks. each running 4 batteries and 8700 watts..after three years on the f150 with v6 it was still working fine with over 119,000 miles..the expedition had the same system in it and had 89,000 with no problems. now i am scared of the alt on my 03 6.0lpsd.
