C6 Teeth Cause a Price Difference ????

Ordering a transmission for a 1978 F250 C6.

Price for 6 teeth C6 is $514
Price for 8 teeth C6 is $635

Anyone know why the number of teeth would cause that much difference?

Transmissions are both remanufactured by Accurate.

I wouldnt know off the top of my head but is the truck a 4x4 or 2x4? that might make the difference. Im not that in depth on transmissions yet.

2x4.

If 4x4 the cable goes into the transfer case. On 2x4 it plugs into the tailpeice just ahead of the drive shaft.

Refers to the number of teeth on the speedo drive gear on the output shaft.

I was able to position a mirror and a flashlight so I could see the spiral gear inside the tailpeice. There's more than 8 teeth on that one too. I could not c o u n t them because the flastlight and mirror were shaking too much. :-)

I suppose from reading what I could find searching this forum I could take either transmission and calculate a different speedo cable gear and acheive the same configuration or at least close.

I couldn't find anything in Detroit Iron about the speedo gear other than one hard to see picture of the tailpeice shaft. In that picture it's hard to see but it sure looks like there's a lot more than 6 or 8 teeth.

That may be what it appears to be, but it isn't. The angle of how you are looking at the gear makes it appear to have more teeth then are there. The 73/79 Ford truck parts catalog lists for a 1978 F250 460 two different gears. It's either 6 or 8.

If the Ford Trans ID tag (left side of case near levers) on your trans reads: PJD-W11 or W12 it's a 6 tooth gear.

If it reads: PJD-Z11, or Z12 it's an 8 tooth gear.

If your tag doesn't match these codes, the trans has been changed. List what the ID code is, I'll tell you what number of teeth the gear has.

There isn't a tag.

Stamped on the housing is D7AP-7006-AA on the truck now

From another trhead we were on:
From partsdummy on FT forum:
D7AP-AA = 1977 Ford/Mercury/Lincoln C6 (D7TP is F Series)
Just ask for one for a 1977 Lincoln Town Car.

I asked for a LTC but one place couldn't get one and the second was so unsure I decided to go with what was listed for the truck.

I have a 17 tooth speedo cable and according to the online calculator that matches and 8 tooth shaft gear. If it was a 6 tooth the calculator came up with a 13 tooth gear.

In the photos I took I can clearly see 8 raised ridges on the shaft gear. I admit the two farthest apart look a little shorter than the rest but ........

Anyway, let's say that I buy (it's already ordered) an 8 tooth C6 and the speedo is off enough to be a problem and I should have got a 6 tooth can't I just get a different speedo cable gear and replace the one I have?

Uh...LOL...Partsdummy is actually NumberDummy.

Ford only made the driven gears with 16 thru 21 teeth, so there's no such thing as a 13 tooth gear.

Yeah, my memory leaves something to be desired. :-)

Well as long as the guage works on the dash I can put some magic marker lines to shoe the correct speed. :-)

Also, logically if Ford only made 16 - 21 tooth gears and Ford made the Transmissions 6 and 8 toothed one the 16 - 21 gears should work. No??

Right now I'm not sure I really care as long as I get back reverse and 3rd. LOL

Drive with the flow minus a few MPH and I shouldn't really even need a speedometer. Might be a problem if I'm the only one on the road I guess. :-)

The reason for different output shafts with different tooth count is to compensate for rear end ratios which can be from 2.75 to 4.10 from the factory. Maybe some others too.
