What years were the factory toppers available? Is there any one year more desireable than another? I found one pretty cheap off of a 76. I havent looked at it yet so I was wondering if there was anything in particular I should look for.
Yeah I identified it as factory Ford in the pics since it has the emblem on it. Also it has the sliding side windows. It does have a problem. The front slider has come out of it and the fiberglass piece below it which is part of the topper has come out. I dont know if its broken or how it is suppose to be connected to the rest of the topper. All Ive seen so far is the pics so Im not sure if its totally worth my time. http://omaha.craigslist.org/pts/455282231.html
I,d go get if the price was right. say $20.00. You might run across another with the glass broke. Then you could put together a nice one. If you can find the rear hatch gasket!
I'm still lookng for more parts for mine.
I also made a nice electric lift to lift it up to the ceiling in my garage
Seeing as these are quite hard to find anymore, that one looks like it could be repaired with a little inginuity, like m78 said, for $20 or so... (That front cross piece is a weak spot, seen others break in that area).
I've been looking for another one of these for a couple years.
it wouldn't take much work to repair that ,a little fiberglas matting, some resin and hardener, and its fixed. in some areas its hard to find a factory canopy.if you find them plentiful in your area, pass on it.if they are rare in your area, buy it and fix it. the glass is well worth the $50.00 asking price alone.
These toppers are quite flimsy compared to newer ones,I imagane alot of them have been trashed. The window tracks on the side sliders, hinges, latches, are steel and rust out.I dont think they have gel coat because the fiberglass gets exposed.
m78, I'm sure they have their weak spots, but these aren't flimsy, in fact they're very heavy; the rear hatch is double-walled. I've found the rear hatch hinge rusts out easily too...
tankrsc, I've posted a want add also a month ago, no replies, but I'm in another part of the country than you!
Hmm, to think I just gave mine away a couple months back after trying to sell it first for 6 mths. Had to list it for free just to get somebody to come up and get it off my property - oh well, it was given to me in the first place. Got a couple years use out of it and then went with shortboxes. Had no idea they'd be worth much!
