I have a 2001 Excursion. i have a problem starting it sometimes. When i try to start it nothing happens, but all the dummy lights work and one time i pulled the second relay and pushed it back in and it started right up. This last time it would not start i pulled the same relay and pluged it back in and nothing happend. But i noticed the number two relay was really hot. so i bought a new one and put it in. but it still wouldn't start. and i went back out there two hours later and it started right up. so i pulled the new one out which was hot also and put in the old one. and it started right up. what could be the problem? could it be the starter cylinoid or the ignition switch? because something is making the number two relay get hot. and something is not leting the starter turn over when the truck is hot. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be?
Since you're talking of the starter not turning over, you'd think there would only be be two circuits that could possibly be involved, one to the solenoid, and the other to the actual starter motor.
From a diagnostic point of view, the easiest problem would be if the solenoid is working in the sense that it is drawing current (which would explain the hot relays), but its not always closing adequately to run the starter motor itself. So the next time this happens put a meter on the starter motor itself to determine whether it is receiving 12 volts out of the solenoid. If not, then measure the input to the solenoid for 12 volts.
I suspect one or the other will be bad, and can be fixed or replaced. I'd certainly rather have the problem in the alternator/solenoid (easily replaced) than to have a faulty/intermittent ignition switch!
