I pulled the engine out of the 75 F250 and I was hoping somebody here might be able to educate me.
The heads have a D3TE- 7?
The block has a reverse 105 (501)
The date is 4L20 with 2 dots under the 4 there is the #105 again under the date, both of which are upside down.
I did the dowel measuring thing in three of the cylinders and came up with 3 3/4.
Thanks for the help in advance!
Block is a 74/Nov/20 casting. Reverse 105 is a MCC foundry casting. There was a D3TE-D head maybe that was it? Sounds like a 390 by the stroke you checked.
you can also ID from the rear crank flange which is visible by removing the clutch inspection cover. A 360 crank will have a half moon machined into the outer edge of the flange. 390 will not.
Wow, that was a quick response! I don't know what I'm going to build right now. When I first bought the truck, I looked at the door tag and saw that it had a 360. Not knowing a whole lot about these things, as I am relatively new to these monsters, I thought I was good to go. But, after doing a whole lot of reading and stuff on this site, I found that a 360 wasn't as good as a 390 and that the only way to tell them apart was to check the stroke. So I did and I think I smiled for a week when I found out I was actually looking at a 390. It still runs, a bit rough mind you, but it runs. I believe it has a bit of a cam in it because of the "lope". But like I said, I'm not an expert so it could just be not timed right or something because when I first brought it back to the house, it ran like crap. Then I found the distributor was loose, after tightening, and a small adjustment by ear, it came to life. It doesn't like to idle, but when you hit the go pedal, it screams! Almost like a dragster or something! So, I'm not really sure what it is, but it sounds good to me! Right now, I'm in the middle of fixing the body and frame stuff, so that I can work on the drivetrain during the winter. I will eventually tear it down, along with the tranny and transfer case and take a look at the internals. As it sits now, it leaks out of every possible place you could think of, but still runs and sounds good, hmm.. must be a Ford thing! I appreciate the info, I know when it comes time to rebuild, I'll be picking some of yalls brains to get this thing running like it should be. Thanks yall!
