390 or not 390 this is the question.....
Hey Guys
My son has a FE engine he pulled from his 1976 F-150 after he destroyed the truck mudding.... ( my fault never taught the boy to quit....lol )
My question is, What FE is it for sure.
There is NO casting number on it anywhere... date code under oil filter housing is 3K5. To me, I read it as November 5 1963.
On the front of the block where most FE have a 352 cast in them. This one has a backwards 105.... Yeah, I double checked to make sure.
It also has a weird casting toward the front of th eblock on the side. Which looks likea M but stretched out, almost looks like a bird. Under this M is two C's one inside the other.
It has the reenformed webbing like high performance FE's.
I checked and there is no 428 marking in the center freeze plug... just in case I read the date code wrong.
I have a very old caliper I used to measure the bore. It looks like a 4.13 (428)which is to big for 390. Weird size to bore it to, if you start with standard 390 bore.
It has solid flat tappet in it, but it is drilled for the oil passages I believe. At least the passages have screw plugs in them.
It has a big X on the outside of the block toward the back on driver's side.
And no, not lucky enough for there to be crossbolts in this bolt.
The question of which engine it is for sure. Basically is for my own sake of mind.
He is buying a 1982 Bronco to put this beast in now....lol
Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Sounds like a rebuild. I suspect it was originally a 360 with the mirror 105 block (good block BTW). Someone bored it to 4.13" (428 standard bore) and put a solid lifter cam in it. I'd suspect they put 428 crank and rods in it too.
The MCC is for Michigan Casting Center, where the mirror 105 blocks were cast.
At any rate, I'd recheck the bore with something more accurate if you're not comfortable with the measurements of your very old caliper. Then check the stroke. It sounds like you've got something there.... Sounds like they rebuilt it into a 428, and a good one at that if it's got a solid lifter cam.

More likely it's either a .060" over 360 or 390 (4.11) The date code you translated was 10 years off. Add ten years to what you interpreted. Also check the crank casting numbers to ID it. C4AE-B, 2U or 3U will be a 390. 410/428 cranks will be a 1U or 1UA. Don't recall what the 352/360 casting numbers were.
