Door Panel Removal

I need help in exactly how the vertical piece at
the rear of the front door comes off. I can
see the two clips at the top and bottom.

Do you push the clips toward the front of the
truck? Or do you get a screwdriver in and twist?
I don't want to break something I shouldn't.
I read that it pops off, but I can't figure how.

And if one of the clips does break superglue will hold it well enough to keep it attached to the truck until you either have to take it off again or whack it really hard accidentally.

It cost me about $27 to replace the piece after breaking the tabs twice. I broke the tab the 1st time when I removed all the moulding on my 01 to add sound deadening throughout.

Does the clip come off with the trim piece?

on my 2001 door panel you take two seetmetal screws out along the bottom edge of the panel. then you pull thetrim off around the door handle and remove a couple sheet metal screws in there. then you push the entire door panel up an inch or two to get the clips to pop out of the holes. normally the clips stay with the door panel.

Yes- at least you hope it does. Sorry, couldn't resist.

I think one clip is horizontal(bottom) and one vertical(top).

I found some pictures at the place below, just not
sure about getting the vertical trim piece off.

Honest, as some previous posts have suggested, that piece just pulls off- the clip is a metal tab formed over a plastic tab on the trim. The clip goes into a slot in the door frame. The piece that will break is the plastic that holds the metal clip to the trim. The picture you're looking at in the link is of the top clip. I bought a "trim" removal tool that came in very handy when I removed all the trim pieces in my 01 supercab, but a screw driver will work just fine if you are careful.

The key is to pull as evenly as possible on the sides. Try and pull from as close to the clip as possible- a tool allows you to get in right on the clip and pull from there with less chance of breaking. I worked on clip at a time. Used the tool to get fingers under one side then worked the tool under the other side and before I could get my fingers under the opposite side the top clip popped out. Once that clip popped the second one followed about 2 seconds later. Just don't twist and you'll be fine. Also if you do manage to break a clip, superglue will hold it well enough to mount the trim. So long as you don't have to take that piece off again it will be fine.

When you have the door panel off I would highly recommend some sort of sound deadening material- Fatmat or Dynamat. If not the whole door at least around the speaker mounts. You will be quiet pleased at the improvement.

Good luck
Tim

Thanks,
I was finally able to get the trim off by looking
at it from the top to see exactly how it is attached,
and even without breaking a tab. Now for the next
adventure, why are the windows are binding.
I appreciate the tip about sound deadening.
