Is it as simple as un-screwing the lid, change the filter, put the lid back on and go? I haven't seen any proceedure for this task and I have never done it.
I just read the thread re "Algae" and thought this is a good time to take a look see.
i drained the fuel out of mine first it's a little black valve on the passenger side of the truck and i had to use a screw driver to beat mine loose i bought a replacement cover at napa for like $20 it's pretty easy to do a lot of guys on here say to clean the fpr screen while your in there you gotta take out 2 10mm bolts on the driver side of the truck it's pretty easy to just becareful with the little rubber o ring i screwed mine up and had to buy a new one
Thanks guys, I didn't know if I had to refill the filter bowel prior to putting the lid back on. Also, I recall from another thread that there is a stand pipe that can be un-screwed and something cleand also. I recall a warning that it is either a RH or LH thread..I Forget. Does this ring a bell with anyone and is it connected to the fuel filter?
the fuel filter slides over the stand pipe, no need to mess with it unless the bottom of the housing is full of crud, yes it is LHT, but usually just draining the housing is enough. BTW my valve is yellow.

Just pull the cover, no need to drain first. Pull the filter. Replace the filter with your new one. Put the cap back on & start your truck.
Some filters are sold with the cap already on them. If you have one of these, you'll have to buy one that is the same or buy a new cap also.
Thanks for the info! There is a dealer close to me and I'll get it tomorrow. When I change the filters out I assume the old one is going to drip fuel everywhere when it comes out? Also, when changinf oil do I fill the filter up before I install it with 2 qts. of oil? Then is it 12 or 14 qts. in the crankcase?
Yes, the filter should hold about two quarts. Fill the filter before installing. For those that aren't sure about this, filling the oil filter before installing should ALWAYS be done.
Twelve to fourteen quarts for the crankcase sounds about right. I think the 7.3 holds fifteen quarts total (including filter), so, to prevent overfilling, add 12 quarts to the crankcase, check the dipstick, and adjust as needed.

It has been a long while since I have done filters on a 7.3L, but I do not remember the fuel filter change to be too messy and yes 2 qts for the oil filter and 12 - 13 qts for the crankcase sounds right. Capacity is 15 qts.
If you have not bought your oil filter yet, you may want to check the price at the International dealer while you are there. Part number is 1822731C1 or 1814562C1. Which ever is the cheaper and instock will work. They are both the same filter.
Remember to print a copy of the sale flyer for your fuel filters and take it with you. Just in case there is any question on the price.

Thanks again, I've already bought a motocraft oil filter at Wally world

Good... I was going to tell you that I use motorcraft filters and get them for $10 at most auto parts stores or WallyWorld.
The 7.3 PowerStroke Diesel engine holds 14 quarts of oil total. Filling the oil filter which holds about 2 qts. is considered a good idea but it won't noticeably hurt your engine if you don't. Most of the time I do add at least 1 qt to it before I put it on but not always & I have over 378,000 miles on mine.
