>I put a K&N FIPK on my 96 4.9L with a great performance
>gain.
>Also get the exhaust done
>MSD6A Ignition system
Sprocket; your power gains are probably due to your 96 being MASS AIR vs. his 95 with speed density. His setup is not as tunable as yours is as far as air flow.
Open up the exhaust (headers are a waste of money with little to no gain on the 4.9L) and get the MSD 6A.
A tune-up with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor as a minimum for parts is also a good start. Do this 1st tho to get a baseline.
Electric fan and MSD 6a ignition and open up the exhaust.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
That's it for mods now, saving for a Stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
I think the MSD is a great mod, I'd start with that, unless u have a drive for loudness, get the exhaust. The intake kits don't do much, i'd do that last if at all.

with all this talk about the MSD, how much improvemnt does it make? i was going to buy the msd 6a 1st then a new coil and harness and plug wires due to a lack of funds.
It makes a noticeable difference, much more than an FIPK would make. I'd guestimate about 20hp. It makes a longer, multiple spark under 3 grand that improves combustion, and about 3K rpm there isn't enough "time" for the mult. sparks, so it will amplify the power to the spark plugs. At high speeds, the coil has a hard time making enough power, so the MSD helps out, and makes the engine run smoother at higher RPM.

Go with the coil first, that is where you will see the most improvement also replace the wires too the larger diameter ones.
Also replace the cap and rotor at the same time. The MSD on mine ( 90 F150 EFI 5 speed )seemed to help the engine wind up quicker. Remember this is a long stroke TRUCK engine not a short stroke V8. The improvements will be slight here and there, nothing dramatic, but every little thing helps. With your EFI you are not going to be able to bolt on very much horse power. If you want to add horse power you had better open up your wallet real WIDE. Or get a bottle of NITROUS and a basket to put the engine parts in after the first time you use it./
so for all to this concerns..get the coil, 8.8mm wires, rotor, etc 1st then the ignition box...hell im not looking to smoke people on the street i just want a little more oommmpphhh, otherwise i am perfectly happy with my truck and engine.
i'm am at the same spot optical is. I just want to have a tiny bit more power for goin down the highway. My truck is just the slightest bit slower that i would like.
Its also definitly in for a good cap/rotor/plugs/wire change too. Heck i don't know when the last time the oil filter was changed...
I disagree with the comment about headers being a waste. I gained 7 mph in the 1/4 with a set of Hedmans with a 3" single exhaust and Flowmaster muffler. I fabricated the exhaust myself for far under $500. Actually, every mod on my truck cost less than $500. The headers were $120, muffler $50, adjustable fuel pressure regulator $50, traded for 19lb injectors, misc. exhaust tubing $50. Best time: 17.13 @ 75.58. Best time for similarly modded 302 truck on slicks: 17.57@77.xx.
FWIW, my next mod will be an MSD box. Mainly because the ignition system is the only thing left that will help me go faster without opening the engine.
