Ok here is the story: I have got an F-250 1991, 7,3idi and E4OD 4WD.
Now I have the opportunity to buy a 1990 with the same engine but 2WD and manual transmission. It has also got the same interior as mine. But the question is: Is it possible to swap the tranny and keep the 4WD??
its is not that simple to convert a zf5 speed from 2 wheel to 4 wheel.
The tailshaft of these transmissions is built into the mainshaft. The 2wd and 4wd shafts are different lengths. In order to even remove the tailshaft housing on A ZF5 transmission involves removing and disassembling nearly the entire transmission as the mainshaft, countershaft and reverse shafts with the gear clusters of all 3 plus the shift rods are all stacked on the tailshaft housing.so to pull the tailshaft housing you have to take all the guts out. so it would be alot easyier to find a 4x4 zf 5 speed
There aren`t many of these trucks in Norway, so it will not be easy to find .
My E4OD changes just fine, but I am not happy with it when offroading,or driving at the local roads with low speed and often stop/accelerate.
I think there is too much "converter-slip". I don`t think it is anything wrong.
So maybe what I need is a new and better converter with low stall speed?
Any suggestions?
divorced means its not attached to the tranny. basically it has a small drive shaft going to the t case to power it then it distributes the power to the front and rear axles via drive shafts...
divorced transfer cases came on f250s with four spds until 76 most I have seen were 205s very tuff units I have one in an old highboy that has a 6.9 over 300000 miles of abuse never touched the transfercase still runs but is retired.
the only thing is your front driveline is long it will wear out ujoints if you never run it in 4wheel.
