I have heard alot of talk about 4.2 liter V6 and how the coolant leak is notorious for dooming the engine. I have a 1998 F150 with the 4.2 liter V6 and yes the motors gone probably due to the coolant leak.
Everybody talks about rebuilds vs. remanufactured, but I haven't seen anything about a replacement.
If I decide not to go with a remanufactured 4.2, is there another size engine that will go in without modifications ie. new transmission, etc.
If anyone can advise on the best course of action it would be greatly appreciated. Right now I have a good truck that doesn't leave the driveway.
You could maybe find a used 4.2L from a '99 or newer. From what I understand those dont have the infamous hydrolock issue.
The 302 swap would be a possible solution, but I dont see where its going to gain you much. Sure, the 302 is probably going to be slightly more reliable, but its going to be just as gutless as ever.
What about a 4.0L V6 from a Ranger or Explorer? At least then you would be steppin up to an OHC engine.
