power steering hose leaking

77 f250 4x4, the return hose for steering is leaking where it zig-zags on the cross-member of the frame. the hose is steel, i am considering just cutting the tubing and bypassing that section of tube. anyone think this is a bis mistake (will pump over heat) . use the truck daily (local only, maybe 20 miles day). would be 5 minute fix. on a different note, i had a fuel starving situation with my 2150 motorcraft. would be driving fine, then felt like it was starving. i'm pretty sure i found the problem, the float was shifting slightly, allowing fuel by (it was actually flooding) , fuel was coming out the vent (bowl). the spring that holds the float in position was not in the grooves on the shaft thing. hope this helps someone else.

Are you sure it's the hard line leaking, and not just running down and dripping off? Maybe tighten or replace the clamps if they are the non tightenable cinch type. When my PS pump was leaking it looked like that too but it was the pump.

You could always cut it, and slide rubber PS hose over the metel ends and put a couple clamps back on there. Sounds cheesy I know but I'm not to sure how hot the PS gets on the return so I wouldn't just remove it. If it's near an end, cut off a small section.

i was gonna cut it close to the pump, and swing the rubber hose that's already there over. your idea is better. leave the line , cover the leaking area and clamp it. thanks mike

2wds don't have that cooler assembly, unless you are offroading a lot I wouldn't worry about it too much if you decide to remove the cooler. If you have the proper tools, cut out the offending steel section, flare each end and slip a piece of power steering hose, PS hose is different than fuel hose it is much thicker and rated to 400 PSI.

Actually Matt,

I am in the process of removing that cooling line from my 75 4x2 parts truck.

So, yes it was installed on 4x2's.

I completely forgot that I added power steering to my 68 2wd... but again, I wouldn't worry too much about it... heat wasn't the major failure for Ford pumps.

Everyne has mentioned a couple of ways to get creative and repair a 30 yr. old hose, but my local parts house has them in stock and sells them for about $28.00 (US).
Wouldn't a new hose be the best bet all around, I mean for the little investment, if it lasted only 15 years, you would be way ahead of the game, since the potential for failure is greater on the old hose.
Murphey rides in my truck, and that repaired hose would break down at the worst possible time. Might put your mind at ease to jusr get a new one.
I realize it is only a return line, and under low pressure.

Part of that hose is all that the steel line from the factory.

I suppose a new clamp could be put on it.

Make sure that the hose you get is for a 1977 or earlier. The 1978/79 hose has a different fitting with an O ring on it, and it will not work on 1977 and earlier models. Power steering pumps changed in 1978.

P/S return hoses sold by autoparts stores may not have the cooling grid on it.

Bill is right, the return hose that the parts store sells is just hose, not the steel.
