troublesome 82 4.9L
It need to give it a fair bit of gas and crank it for a good 20 seconds before it fires up. After that I need to keep giving it gas for a few minutes, or drive it to the end of the driveway and back before I can take my foot off the gas without it dieing. After that it will run no problem.
Just after I set my timing (to spec) I noticed a loud noise from the engine during moderatre acceleration - It sounded like a big deisel! I retarded the timing about 2-3 degrees and it went away.
Half the time I shut it off now it will deisel - engine keeps "running" for a few seconds.
Just recently also, I noticed a clacking noise coming from the engine during acceleration just after start up. It goes away in a minute or two as soon as it warms up a bit though. After all that it runs perfectly (until I shut it off). The engine has about 120 k miles on it.
My question is:
-Where do I start to go about fixing these problems?
-I saw a low mileage 95 efi 300-6 in the classifeilds for about $500. I am pretty handy with electronics and such. Would I be better off swapping in an efi engine.
Ultimately I would like a smooth, quiet dependable engine that's decent on gas, and starts up easily. I'm pleased with the hp I'm getting right now - and I'm more interested in making a nice interior (thus the quiet engine).
thanks,
Alan
The timing thing, your timing might have slipped a tooth, also common in these engines.
The solution to all these: Buy my engine! $600, e-mail me for specs.
