Getting Stuck

I was trying to pull someone out who got high-centered on a sandbar on the Red River, and there was about 4 inches of water over where the road used to be. I couldn't budge him, so I gave up, but one of my friends got in and spun the tires until I got stuck, we tried winching my truck out, but the winch cable had come off the spool, so we tied it to my tow hooks and had a Jeep Commander with a Chevy big block, 37" Boggers and lockers try to pull me out, and he snapped the winch cable. We had to leave it overnight and the water rose about 3 feet. I had to have a custom off-road tow truck come and pull me out, then he got stuck and I had to pull him out. Cost me $400

Sounds like your friend owes you $400, and some extensive maintenance.

Possibly the pin that hold the end of the wire came loose when they spooled it out, my Warn on my ATV did this once. Warn was nice enough to send me a new pin at no charge, but it was a pain in the butt when it happened. Sounds like these guys need some good tow straps, or chains.

Oh ya and never take a PSD swimming they sink really quick in soft soil or mud. They are a great truck for pulling people out, but stay on solid ground.

Too many variables in a situation that progressively got worse.
Sounds like a lack of the correct recovery gear was a big factor, and the improper use of the existing stuff available
Could buy some pretty nice recovery gear for $400,00.
Too bad the truck had to be left overnight.
Did it get very wet inside the cab?

Sounds like it shouldn't have cost you 400 dollars if you had to pull the tow truck out.. lol

you should never spool the cable out that far in the first place! that pin that holds the cable to drum is NOT meant to hold 8, 9, 10 thousand pounds! it is meant strictly to keep the cable wound on the drum neatly. the cable being wrapped around the drum is how it actually holds the weight!

next time use a long strap or chain as a winch line extender. i have used both with great success.

the cable pin had rusted off. yes my friends paid for $300 of it and there was a little bit of water in the cab but there was no damage other than a snapped cable. the ground i was on used to be a road, but my drivers side was a little off to the side. i had never gotten stuck so bad i needed a winch, i always just used chains so the pin came off from not being used, but the cable was not rusted at all.

That's what I asked one day after being wiched up the side of a mountain and all i heard on the raido and echo thru the valley was "HOLD THE BRAKE!"...i sat on the side of that mountain staring at the sky for 45mins to find out during that time they had to fix the winch cable cuz it came out. Longest 45mins of my life that day.

Here are pics of the snapped winch cable, the knot started out about ten times bigger
yea maybe I didn't have the right recovery gear, but I hadn't planned on going mudding, my brother and his dumb friends wouldn't stop calling me and my dad said I should go help so I improvised with what I had.
