the 361 is based on the FE big blocks. basically a medium truck version of the 360. so any FE transmission will fit this engine.

A 361 is from the FT engine family (330/361/391)

Transmatics instead of C6's.

Different engine/transmission mountings.

Bell housings and flywheels are FT only.

FT 4 speed transmissions (Warner & New Process) are similar, FT gear ratios are different than FE's.

Driveshaft and coupling shafts are completely different.

Weird.... Coulda swore I had a 391 FT bored to 4.13 (428 size), and it ran a C6...
reverse "105" on the front of the block and everything...

The FT engines were introduced in 1964 (replacing the Lincoln Y's) and used thru 1978. Not one used a C6.
There's no transmission application chart in the parts catalogs that list a C6 for a FT engine.

Transmatics (the name Ford used instead of Allison) were the only automatic used.

But according to all my sources, the bell housing pattern is the same for all:
332 V8
352 V8
360 V8
361 V8
390 V8
391 FT V8
410 Mercury V8
427 V8
428 V8
regardless of what transmission 'came' with the engine... So any FE transmission should work, no?
