4 Wheel shift

This is a revival of my "doesnt make since" thred. I now have everything fixed and the truck drives fine, but it still will shift in to 4 wheel at any speed without any grinding. The wheels are unlocked!

Can anyone explain?

If the front wheels are un locked and the shifter is in 2HI, the axle/drivshaft should be stopped at whatever speed. If I'm driving at say 40 and I shift into 4HI, it should grind. There's no clutch in there (transfer case) that I'm aware of. If the front axle is spinning at speed, I'm losing millage

True but there is no resistance to turning the drive shaft either, as a matter of fact I would think that there is some forward momentum aplied from the hubs even if they are unlocked. I have never looked under my truck at highway speed to find out. A grind could be damaging to the chain in the 1356 t-case however.

I wouldn't shift going any faster than 15mph just to be on the safe side!! Try
wrapping some electric tape around the driveshaft at least a couple wraps then
tie the end to the frame, Go for a ride in 2wd get up to 55mph then check if it
is still together if it ripped off the frame you have a lot of parasitic drag or have
a hub that is engaged. I would take off the cap and clean and regrease the
actuator deal and try the tape again.

First the shafts do start to spin going down road . I used to have a video of truck with no hubs at all and axles and shafts start to spin after while (like at 55 MPH ). If there is the slightest drag at all it will cause movement of axles ETC . .

But with out the front locked (lock out hubs) What stress is there on shift to 4x4. Good luck if the 4x4 works don't worry about it. .

I may try Blue's idea. Also, I may try using a hanger strung thrugh the universal and see if my millage gets better. It would seem like if that much mass was spinning and I put on the brakes (stopping the truck), it would spin for a while makeing noise.

I wouldn't use anything solid, Don't forget your fuel and brake lines are right there
too!! If that hanger comes off it could spin around and clearhouse under there!!
Try duct tape if the electrical tape gets torn and another test to do to make sure
the hubs are engaging is to wrap the duct tape around the ds and engage the left
hub first and go forward a couple of feet and then do the same for the other side,
It should immediately tear the tape with no problem!!

Mine will shift at 70. Yet when it's stopped I can turn the driveshaft easily by hand. I have allready jacked up the truck (with the hubs unlocked) and spun both wheels and they dont turn the driveshaft. Ithink if the hanger comes off, it will wind up very quikly. But I will try the tape first to see how much strength it has. It would seem to not be much. My hubs are definatly working as I have been driving without a rear driveshaft for a week. I have a locker in my front diff, but I dont see how that would factor in.
