I am not sure if I can post this on hear but I will give it a try. With the holiday season coming up fast I was wondering how many people would be interested in trying to send care packages to the troops overseas. I do not want this to turn into a political debate or any thing like that I just want to know if people on this site would be interested and also if any body has addresses to soldiers currently serving over there now. The holiday season is really hard for them I know I have been there. I thought it would be neat to show them that people still care. I am thinking if people have names and addresses of soldiers currently serving if they email them to me then i can forward them to any one interested in doing this hope fully that will keep there information from floating round the Internet well tell me what you guys think any ideas would be great this is my first time trying to do something like this Thanks. Matt
i would love to help with this but moneys tight my dad just returned from iraq and im headed to basic in a couple of weeks but if i run across any extra money ill send it your way.

Tell your dad thanks and good luck yourself stay safe. This is not about money or any thing like that If all you can do is send them a card or thank you letter it will mean more to them than most people will ever know. I just want them to know that people back home still care about and support them. Matt
These guys and girls will appreciate anything you send their way. There are several internet based groups that collect for care packages. Some are even legit. If you've got a local American Legion, VFW, or Masonic Lodge, those folks can usually put you in the right direction (probably even have a program of there own). Prepaid phone cards are a hot item for the troops. Beware of some internet organizations that you buy cards online to be sent, Joe never see's a lot of them and the money goes in Bubba's pocket somewhere.
Thanks for serving, thanks for joining, and thanks for thinking about the troops.

Just submitted one of the cards on that site, not much I know, but I can barely afford to pay for myself right now being a college student.
It's the thought that counts, money can't buy a pat on the back. They'll remember that card and message long after they've used up a phone card or ate a melted candy bar.

Dave, I see you have been there and received those nice melted candy bars thanks. Thanks for Scan for helping. Just trying to do my part and let the troops know we still care. Matt
books baby wipes golf ***** vaseline (don't ask) deodorant disposable cameras (not necessarily for preserving memories either, these things actually have a tactical value) flavored drink mixes - the kind that come in those small tubular-shaped packages, they are the perfect amount for bottles that the filtered water comes in - just dump one or two, or four of those little packages of raspberry or peach tea, or lemonade, and you got a party! basic hygiene products (shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, etc.) not so much for the soldiers but they are nice things to give to the good locals. fun stuff for kids (big bags of candy, crayons and coloring books, school supplies, crazy sunglasses, soccer *****, you name it...) nothing makes doing that horrible job easier than playing with the kids and making them smile, even if it's just for that moment. water guns (the bigger, the better)
I hope this helps anyone who might be thinking of putting a troop care package together, and God bless you all for thinking about them.

I see your signature says Baghdad Thanks for doing what you are doing. Are you going to be there for a while if you are send me an email with your address so we can send you and your unit some care packages. Thanks again and stay safe Matt
I'm currently serving in Mosul, Iraq and have been here just over a year. We should be going home in the next two months. Having spent last Christmas here I can tell you everyone really gets a kick out of cards and letters from children in elementary school. It's always funny to read their take on what goes on here and they usually get posted all over our headquarters building. Additionally, bathroom products go a long way if you're looking for ideas. I don't think I've bought bathroom products the whole year. If you search the internet you can find plenty of organizations that do care packages for deployed Soldiers. My wife established a non-profit organization called Operation Remembrance and can be found at http://www.operationremembrance.org/ You might be able to find some links on that site. She does memory boxes for our fallen heros but believe their site has some links that might be useful.
Thanks for thinking of all the men and women who are away from home serving.
Thanks, but I'm home now - I have been for almost a year. My unit is waiting for our next alert, which will probably come either spring or summer of the coming year.
abnsigo,
God bless you brother. It's nice to be a short-timer, huh. Don't get complacent! Yeah, we had a PX on the FOB, but hardly ever went there except for movies and haircuts. We had so much hygiene supplies sent from home that we started handing them out to the local villagers - they really loved it.
I had some buddies in Mosul. It wasn't as peaceful as it was rumored to be. They brought the Strykers (172nd SBCT) down to help out in my battalion's AO - we were spread really thin and It was getting pretty bad. That was right before the troop surge. But I keep hearing that things are really turning around over there now. So keep your head on a swivel and stay safe.
