hey fellas
today i was taking off my box and when i was drving it up to my barn to pressure wash it i noticed it didnt have much oil pressure. my oil level is perfect so its not from low oil. how can i test if my gauge is broken or not?
and how hard is it to replace an oil pump?
thanks
Mitch
rule of thumb for oil pressure is 10 PSI for every 1000 RPM. Flow of oil at idle is more important than pressure. Ignore it till you are ready to drop in the pan, polish the crank and roll in some .001 undersized bearings You are probably showing copper on the bearings. Start using heavier oil, like straight 40 or 50 when the pressure really gets low, for now upgrade to 20-50.

messing around with oil with low oil pressure is a guessing game. I would run a thicker oil, and ignore the idiot light/gauge until your motor starts ticking loudly. (that wont happen unless you run low on oil) If you want your oil pressure to come up even higher, substitute one quart of oil with lucas oil stabilizer. That is some THICK stuff. I'ts about $30 a gallon.
You aren't going to have much pressure until you put in some super thick oil. Even then, you will have good oil pressure at idle only for a few hundred miles. For the winter, I would leave the stuff you have in for now. In the summer time, switch to the straight weight oil.
This chart is in Celcius, the lower in Fahrenheit.
