I was doing a little off roading when I ripped off the wiring to my ABS senser on my rear end. No the anti-lock light is lit up in the dash. I heard that this not being hooked up can send a faulty signal to the computer and actually make the truck run different (worse) I personaly have not notice a change but any little mod helps... Does anyone know anything about this?
Thats what I thought too, I just heard this info and wanted to double check on it. I have a harness coming anyway, I can't stand driving with a dummy light on even though its nothing it irritates me...
Just got a 92 with 4.9/5sp. The abs light is on. Also, the speedo needle is erratic and the cruise control will not stay activated. Are all 3 of these problems related? Thanks.
Having the abs not working will not effect your engine or tranny, I have been driving mine for 2 years with no problems.
As for the speedo/cruise in the 92, that is off a seperate sensor on the tranny and the abs is off the diff. The 94 uses only one sensor off the diff. You could have 2 wiring problems. The abs may just be a fuse, there is one in the cab and one under the hood, if I do recall, in the power distribution box. I would start with the speedo as this may save you a fine or to for speeding!
Thanks for the info. Especially the diff between the 92 and later trucks. For now, I'll just leave it in the garage, hate to drive it on NY salted roads.

The '92 uses the rear axle sensor for ABS, cruise, speedo, and engine controls, just like all later trucks.
Before '92, the speedo was cable-driven and the cruise sensor was on that cable, usually at the base where it entered the trans/t-case.

Pull the sensor out & clean all the metal shavings off it. Then try to figure out why your diff/gears/axle are shaving metal.
Steve83, The speed sensor I have in my truck now with a dana 60 rear is from a 92'. The Ford dealer sure thought it was when I purchased it. I got the info on the 92, from this site(FTE), as to where to start when doing the D60 conversion. As this was a big concern of mine, cause I didn't want to have to swap the dash out for a cable setup.
Also in my manual, in the manual transmission section and the transfer case section, states, I quote "connect the speed sensor electrical connector if equiped". And in further research, I found that 90/91 bronco's used a speed sensor in the diff and one in the t-case. This may not be the right sensor for the truck but being able to reprogram the speedo may have let the mismatch slide.
You may be correct in the 92 being all in one, but I based my response to this thread on the info from my purchase from Ford.
I wonder if there is a Ford electrical guru out there that can give all of us the correct info on the speedo/abs setups, so as to not mislead others when trying to help.
I've done the swap from cable to non-, and I've researched the functioning & wiring of the PSOM. What did I post that you're taking issue with? Your truck is pre-'92, right? So you'd have a VSS on the speedo cable at the t-case.
Pre-92 had the cable out of the t-case for the speedo, with a sensor for cruise, etc. The one on the diff was for the rear ABS. In 92 they went to everything running off the VSS on the rearend.
Sorry if I sound like I was taking issue to something you said, Steve83, cause I didn't mean to do it.
I have a 94 F150 and yes everything is off the rear diff. I went to the Ford dealer and asked for a 92 Tcase speed sensor, as I was lead to believe from info I gathered on this site, that in 92 they were separate. The parts guy punched it in, went to the shelf, and said here you go, I took it home installed it (lucky the drive gear was in there), hooked the wires up, and messed with the speedo programming. It has been working fine, and speedo must be close to accurate cause I have not gotten any speeding tickets and the speedo matches the posted limit as compared to the rest of the cars around me.
Now as far as what the parts guy sold me, I don't know, but it worked.
So what you guys are telling me that this is a pre 92 speed sensor I have installed? I don't mean to sound like I don't believe you, I would like to know what I got, to keep my info straight, and knowledge correct!
You may be right and 92 could be different. It uses the same electronic speedometer as later models so I figured it got the signal from the same place. An easy test would be to unplug the connector on the rearend and see if the speedo still works.

Where exactly did you install this '92 sensor? In the rear axle or in the t-case? If it was in the axle, it's the ABS sensor that the PSOM uses. The one in the t-case is the VSS for the old vacuum-style cruise system that was still used in '92 (and all earlier).
I was mistaken in my earlier post - '92 wasn't the dividing year: In '93, the VSS was deleted and everything ran off the rear end. I wish I could edit it so no one reads it & thinks it's right.
Hey guys the erratic speedo- could probably be due to the abs speed sensor ring. " the gear around your ring gear" which is what the sensor reads as a signal. minealso does the same thing. I have teeth chipped fron that gear when I broke my spiders and spit it out the rear cover. since one of the speeds is right I just left it. it varies between 5 and 15 mph speed dependant. that could also contribute to the abs and cruise control reading being off leading
to an even bigger headach. hope this helps....aloha
