brake problem

I replaced my front brake pads about a month ago because of a little grinding noise. I had the rotors check and they said that they were ok. Well when I replaced the pads they were almost all metal on the outer pad on each end on both sides. The middle looked like it still had life left. Well everything was ok for a couple of weeks and now the grinding noise is back. Any ideas on why the pads would ware on the ends I am going to take a look at them on my next days off, just looking for some ideas. Thanks

Is the caliper sliding freely? They can sometimes freeze up on the pins and apply pressure to one end/side of the pad.

Check for play in the wheel bearings, the rotor is shifting in relation to the calipers

whats the best way to check for play in the bearings? I have never messed with bearings I was told that they had been replaced when I bought the explorer. By the way it is a 1993.

Do you know which side is grinding? As mentioned earlier, make sure the caliper slides freely.

well the sticky pins sound like the best place to start. I did replace the pins when I replaced the pads, but I only used the little grease that came with them. I think I will take a look friday and maybe buy some new pins and a extra tube of grease. Hopefully I have not destroyed the new pads.

BTW... make sure you are putting the pins in properly. It is possible to put them in upside down if you beat on them with with a hammer at which point you will have problems. They should just be gently tapped in.

well I went down to the autp part store got me some new pins and a can of caliper grease. I pulled out the old pins which I think I put the bottoms ones in upside down, lubed everything and installed the new ones the right way. Problem fixed no more grinding, I should have known better the old pins were almost dry live and learn I guess. Thank guys for the help.

caliper grease should do the trick. i normally use anti sieze... anything that can take 3-400 degrees should be o.k. i always wire brush the old pins to get the crud off to get a little extra clearance when installing with the new lube.
