does a performance chip really work? ( in my case )
ive beem told that performance chips only works with high octane gas so.where i live.. we only get 92 octane fuel at the pumps.. so will a performance chip will do any improvments? if so how much ?

The chips work with newer engines with more constriction in them and computers programmed for emissions/mpg. Newer F150s get good gains from chips and air filters and diesels get so much power I have seen blown trannies from chips and driving hard and some even when not driving hard.
I heard and am under the impression that in this era for Ford trucks they are pretty much unrestricted (except for exhaust) and so a chip won't do much. The other reason probably more important that I have read is that the EECIV computer doesn't control everything like the OBDII and newer computers do. So, the chip doesn't do much except spit more fuel or change mixture. Therefore you don't get much gain, maybe 1-2mpg and or a couple horsepower. But, were you talking about chips in general for other engines?
Then they do work but can beat up the engine if too high inputs are in or if you drive it hard. My friend has a 70s suburban with a crate motor in but he set up a newer fuel injection in with OBDII he has a chip and sets his computer via a laptop and pulls his boat then with the comptuer he can offroad and change it again, then when driving around he sets it down again to decrease motor wear.
This is just my very limited knowledge and measly .00000000002cents.
I am sure people will correct me or chime in if I am wrong
I heard that rockers, a performance cam, and advancing the timing does the best performance gains on these engines (with the inclusion of better exhaust components.) There are more and u could do a turbocharger or supercharger but cost mucho $$$$.
Look up posts by conansaki and some other exhaust gurus. They know much more about this stuff. That is where I saw and learned what I did.
yeah i knew also.. but i wanted more info on performance chips... becuase its easier.. well then i will get rockers and Cam my timing is already at 14 BTDC*
Hey just keep this post up here and tommorow we will find out some more info. If the chips get a couple mpg or something it might pay for it in gas money, but the problem is when you get more mpg u probably get more horsepower so people just use it and then don't see the improvements.
If you have money to spare then it might be something to try, but I am a poor college student so I always try and think how to save money, wait that is always how I have been, was taught well by my dad.
Just wait till tommorow around end of work time 4-8pm there should be some water for your thirst of info
I second that Mike....on these trucks the best way to get power is already been said....open the exhaust, the intake and play with the timing a little....Your's is a 91 right? So, you'll have speedensity which won't be as forgiving of mods as a MAF setup.....you can cam it and such but you've got to make sure it will cooperate with it...if not.....and you want a more mild cam....you could always convert it over to MAF via a donor truck....I'm going to be putting a set of 1.7's in my truck today...let you know how they did...but those are gonna be comboed with ported GT-40 heads.......been a month since my truck new what movement was....can't wait...most chips for these years trucks just apply more pressure to the fual anyways as well as advance the timing a little bit.......considering the chips are upwards of 200+....you can do it yourself for MUCH cheaper...don't you think?Luck
from what dragogt showed me I sure hope the next clinton has a different opinion.Hey DJ what fuel system is on your truck? I'm doing some investigating too and maybe we can help each other. The best thing I have done so far is an Accell 300+ ignition. It helped me about 2 mpg and helped power also. 95 F150 302 5 speed 4x4. 20000 miles
