1964/66 tailgates are the same, 1967/72 are the same. The 1967/72 tailgates also have a raised ovate sculpted line surrounding the F O R D letters which are shorter and a different style than 64/66 has.
In 1967 Ford replaced the 1964/66 tailgate (C4TZ-9940700-A) with the 1967 tailgate (C7TZ-9940700-A), so all the 1964/72 gates will interchange between one another.
All the mechanism is identical.

I have both tailgates, the one that came on my 66 that is not in very good condition, however it is salvageable with alot of work. I also have a later one with the rib that is in excellent condition and wolud take very little work. The rib kind of bothers me, it is one of those notable obvious differences. I am trying to decide which way to go. Give me your thoughts. The project that it will go on is pictured in my gallery take a look that may impact your opinion.

I'm a stickler for originality, and would want the correct tailgate to match the rest of the truck.
btw: Your engine should be painted black (1960/67), not Ford Blue. Ford didn't use Blue paint on Ford truck engines till 1968. Only the valve cover on your truck should be painted blue. From 1952 thru 1967, Ford painted the engine one color, the valve cover another. The certain color valve cover was done as a qwik way to ID what engine it had. For example, all 1965/67 F100/350 352 V8's were black engine, gold valve covers.

I have to agree with you on the Tailgate that was my feeling as well. However having that other really nice tailgate sitting there tends to cloud the mind. On the engine paint no doubt you are right, I had not really thought about the correctness of the color until recently when I saw one of your post on the subject. As soon as I saw it I started to remember seeing the colors the way you describe them. I worked as a Ford heavy line Technician for several years back when the blue was the chosen color of Ford rebuilders and was used when major engine work was done. So that was where that came from and I am a blue freak and like the color. So it was pretty automatic without much thought. When I got the truck the engine was a recent rebuild from one of those rebuilders that likes to paint everything gray. I doubt I will change the engine color at this point, unless for some reason it has to be removed. Then I will jump off that bridge when I get to it. Thanks for the input it is very much appreciated.
I would go with the ribbed tailgate, it's not like the bed is stock. If not too labor intensive to repair I would probably keep the other tailgate and work on my body repair skills in my spare time and see how it turns out. If it turns out well yu have an option. By the way, good job on the bed, probably do same on mine.
I say keep the one that came with the 66. Personally I dislike the 67-72 tailgates and hate to see show quality slicks with these 67-72 tailgates. The rib goes with the body styling of the 67-72, with their ribs that run the length of the truck. I think they look cluttered and it is one of the first things I look for when I see a slick that made it into a magazine or at car show.
I got out the original 66 tailgate today and it is not as bad as I remembered it. So work has begun. I took some pics of it before I started and I will take some more along the way and post them. I am sure it will come out as well as the rest of the truck has so far. I guess I will have to post the other one For Sale. Thanks for all your input.
