so i finally get my 86 running and now what?! im getting barely three miles a gallon, i just replaced the coil, and im thinking its the cpu, or the 02 sensor or the fuel regulator but idk, its blowing black smoke?
Run 2 bottles of heet and 2 of iso heet to dry up any water, Some Lucas fuel treatment triple dosed If it has sat awhile the fuel is nasty and this will help bring
it up to par. Take the O2 sensor out and run it through the flame of a propane
torch for 20 seconds and see how it looks, If it is real fouled up it may take longer
but try 20 sec first wipe off with a lint free rag if it is still kind of black and thick
deposits do 10 more seconds and wipe, Just until the thickness is reduced and it is
cleaned up it isn't going to sparkle or look like new you just want the deposits
thinned so it can have better response time!! Clean the IAT sensor try alcohol
to clean it if that don't clean well enough try carb cleaner but don't overspray it!!
Check for Voltage leakage at night get a spray bottle and spray the plug wires with
water, Look for sparks with the lights off jumping between wires, to ground metal or
to low voltage wires which is real bad. Reroute them, add seperators or put split loom
With the new coil probably putting out more voltage, The wires may be leaking more
and may need to be replaced. Put them on your VOM and you should get around
5000 ohms per foot, If it is far off or you have infinity that is a bad wire and not firing
that plug!! Try that cheap stuff first then we will go for more expensive stuff!! My guess is you have a misfiring or not firing cylinder(s) Cleaning the cap and rotor would
help too.
just had all the MAP Sensor stuff replaced, im starting to think its the temperature sensor things, the ones that determine how rich it runs based on water temp?! cause it runs fine when its cold but when it warms up it starts blowing smoke
Check the coolent temp sensor, had one go bad on me once. My mileage dropped, it would'nt start unless I pushed the gas pedal, and then black smoke would come out of the tailpipe. As soon as I put in a new one it ran good again.
If you have black smoke you are fouling out the O2 sensor everytime you run it so
clean it or you will be struggling against the slow reacting o2 sensor. You may not
have a complete missfire if you are losing voltage and not completely burning the
fuel mixture(black smoke) you may not feel it as a solid missfire, But I gave you
some easy, cheap, almost free things to try if you want me to tell you to start
replacing sensors and costing you money off the bat I can do that!! Do not
replace that temp sensor put it on a multimeter and get a resistance reading when
cold then warm it up a bit, check it, warm up some more check, Or you can remove it
and boil some water with the sensor connected to the MM and look for either a
open reading or it to have anything but a steady change in the numbers!! If you
got the money just start throwing sensor(money$) at it or do it the right way and
diagnose the problem.
well we changed the temp sensor thing on the gooseneck and its still not fixed, so because my dad is threatening to set ablaze, we are going to just wait till we get some money and take it to the Ford place. cause neither one of us know what to do
My ranger with the V6 was doing that. My mechanic friend got it to stop some how. He was revving the engine high while it was in nuetral, close to the redline, and after a few minutes of this, the smoke just completely stopped, and never came back, I'm guessing it burned carbon and soot off the O2 sensor. Maybe try going for a long very hard run
Did you clean the IAT (Intake air temp sensor) or do anything I suggested?
If you want to spend all your money you saved up for labor when all they are
probably going to do is replace those Items I told you to clean which the IAT is
$15.00 and they are going to charge $150.00 to replace that, then whatever for
the O2 sensor plus $250.00 for the labor. Well good luck on the the stealership visit!!
Why did you ask for help and not try the suggestions? Well I ain't typing anymore
and will disregard future posts of yours too, since I offered too easy of a fix and
obviously you want a more expensive solution to a simple problem!! Read my post above this one I told you right there that replacing the coolant temp sensor was not going to fix diddly squat. ohh well. Live and learn I guess.
