Hi I have a '93 explorer, I bought it not to long ago. Everything was checked on it and fixed or replaced as needed. So the brakes were done all the way around: pads, calipers, hoses, drums, shoes... Before those were done there was a grinding noise coming from the front on around the drivers side. We were thinking it was the calipers that weren't letting loose so they were replaced. Now even with everything being replaced there is still the grinding sound when you step on the brakes. We can't figure out what it could be now. The rotors weren't replaced or anything but they were checked by a mechanic and was told that they were good for awhile yet. So any ideas out there on what this could be?
when you push on the brake pedal, the caliper holder moves less than 1/8 inch and the pads contact the disc. if the holder is not dragging on something, then the pad or disc is the only thing left. i would jack up the left front, take off the tire and put 2 lug nuts back on to hold the disc straight, turn the disc and listen, look, then put the brake on slightly and do again and look.
If there is any slack in the wheel bearing the rotor will shift outwards when the brakes are applied, changing the clearance with the caliper. Check for scuff marks!
