I got a chance to drive my father-in-laws new 07 Tundra last week. It seems like a fairly solid unit and the power was alright. My truck felt just as strong though even with 81 hp less but maybe once his breaks in fully it will be different. It does have some neat features though like the hydraulic shock assisted tailgate (which they seem to be a problem now) and power folding mirrors. As well the turning radius is real tight for having 20 inch wheels. He did average 19 mpg with his heavy foot which isn't too bad and that is what I average too.
I still wouldn't trade my Ford though as it just seems to fit me better and everything is perfectly placed and feels like a "real" truck. Man I love my Ford!!!
Anyone else have a chance to try out a tundra yet?

The tailgate feature was pioneered by Ford F150 and Titan several years ago. Power folding mirrors aren't anything new either. I've drove a Tundra 5.7 SR5 last February the week they came out, and wrote a synopsis here on FTE of what I found.
The Tundra is an over: Over-Fugly; Over-Hyped; Over-Rated and Over-Priced.
So far, there have been incidents of camshafts breaking on the 5.7, 6 speed transmission failures, and build quality.

thats awesome!!
there's a good chance i'll never be in one. was in a new dodge w/hemi on my holidays. what a TURD!!! i'll put my word to the fact that i think my 4.6 towed the quad trailer as well as that dodge did!!

Yes I did and I was impressed. Loved the drivetrain and once the bugs are worked out and the price drops substantally on them, I would give them a look when I'm buying again.
I would have to own one for some time to comment on the interior. Having the truck for acouple of hours I found it just as comfy as my F150 and Expy. But time would tell how everything else holds up.
On paper the tundra looks great, it looks like really good competition for the f150. Its nice to hear the real world results though of the way it is.
Sherm we have a hemi at work in one of the work dodges. There is NO WAY a 4.6 liter would come close to it in speed, or power! The 4.6 would win in fuel mileage, longevity, and just the plain ol fact that it is a ford though!

Depends on if that Hemi has the MDS. Brother in law has an 06 Hemi and once it was over the break in period, he is getting 25 mpg @ 110 ish. Friend here at work ( you know, one of those, " I know a guy with a..... stories ) has an 06 Durango with the Hemi and he gets the same if not better. The pre-MDS Hemi's get around 12 -15 mpg at best.
Wow I have never heard of a hemi truck getting that kind of mileage. One guy at work has a chrysler 300 (i think thats what its called) with a hemi that shuts off 4 cylinders on the highway, and he claims on the highway it gets 30mpg. I cant say I believe that but who knows.
mileage i know i had him beat, (my uncle's truck, cousin driving). for towing, i drove it for a little while and on the slightest grade it would downshift. 6sp auto?? i dunno, but it was constantly shifting to hold speed. my truck woth the same load, i know the power doesn't even compare, would take a little longer to get to 90k, but it would hold it without downshifting on the same grade the dodge did. its an '06 truck, maybe the MCD or whatever plays a role in that... might also be that i snuck up to 110 to get a run for the little hill... but it wouldn't downshift and dip below 90...

Probably the difference in the gearing ( rear end )and gearing in the tranny would account for the downshifting. My 99 F150 downshifts on the slightest grade while my Expy won't downshift on the majority of the grades my truck will. Same motor size and same gears in the rear end. Although the Expy is a limited slip and I'm not too sure on the transmissions being the same.
The MDS in the Hemi's you can barely tell when it cuts in and out on the highway. Although I have yet to tow with my brother in laws truck, but on the highway he can go way further than I can on a tank of fuel and the tanks are basically the same size. ( We have tested that theory )
I got stuck driving a tundra here at work power is ok on the highway, 4x4 sucks tries to control the wheel spin you don't need that when you're getting stuck. Seats are to small. I keep shifting the wipers instead of the gear shift. No auto on lights have to turn on manually then forget to turn off. Its a girly truck. Been driving it for 4 weeks now and still can't find all the controls. Still waiting for my F250 to arrive they supposedly ordered one for me. Then I will be happy (as long as it isn't white).
Yeah i have heard they have had some problems go on to youtube and see the bed shake they have off the new tundra's its scary im sure many you have seen it but they go over many bumps and its crazy how wobbly it iis
Like it shakes back and forth fast and looks like its gonna fall off
