Transmission Question

Hello Everybody
I have spend a good amount of time working on truck ranging from 1965-1979. I never have worked on an 80-86 pickup truck before. A friend at school went and looked at a truck that is a F-250 custom 4x4 that is somewhere between the years between 1980-86. I am going to go look at it with him soon, but here are a few things that I do know.
It is a manuel 4 speed, and the tranny is shot
it is a V8
So for now, my questions are, which engines were they putting in these trucks, and what 4 speeds were in them? Is it still the 351-400M series and the 460s, or did they have 302's in them. what should I look for to be able to identify the engine down to the particular family (somewhere I read that all these have different amounts of valve cover bolts or something-any easy way to ID?)
Also, what 4 speeds were in them? is it between the NP 435 and the T-18, like the older trucks?
I'm sure more questions will come soon, this is a new era of trucks for me.
Thanks very much for the help in advance, and sorry bout the long post

The early years were not much different from the 79 down models. They had the 302, the 300 six, and the 351m and 400 engines up to about 1983 or somewhere close. After that, they got rid of the 351m and installed the 351w, and they got rid of the 400 and started installing the 460, only in the f250 and up trucks.

The 351m/400 have 8 bolts holding the valve covers on. The 302 and 351w have 6 bolts holding the valve covers on.

There is not that much difference in the engines, and they even used the 9 inch rearend till about 83 or 84 also. Then they used the 8.8 rear for the 1/2 tons. The only major difference is the 4wd twin I beam front suspension they used 1980 and up.

As far as trannies, the early years are the same as the 79 down, with the c6 and the granny 4 speeds. As the years progressed, they started using overdrive trannies, some of which are considered weak compared to the earlier non-overdrive trannies. The automatic overdrive they started using was the AOD. I don't know much about the manuals, except some of the 4 speeds were aluminum, and were basically a 3 speed with a overdrive 4th. I think later on they came out with a Mazda 5speed that is considered ok, but not that great for heavy towing.

First 351W in an F Series truck = 1980

351M/400 discontinued after 1982.

4 Speed Transmissions: Warner T-18 & T-19; New Process 435; Ford TS OD (single rail overdrive); Ford RUG Overdrive.

Post the VIN, AXLE and TRANS codes from the Certification Label. The codes will translate to what it had originally.

Thanks for the help. Quick question, when you say certification lable, what exactly is that and where do you find it?
Thanks again

The label is on the driver's side near the door pin on the jamb. It has a lot of useful information such as paint code, springs, tire size, etc.

What are you basing this info on? I think I am going to have to disagree unless you can convince me otherwise. None of the parts books and stores will sell you anything for a 1980 with a 351w. That's what I swapped into my truck, which was a 1980. I had to be careful if I accidentally said 351w, because they would give me 351m parts.

1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog ~ 351W Engine Section 60.5 ~ Page 1.

Bronco's (U150), Econolines and F Series Trucks are all listed. Distinct parts for F100/350's and U150's are listed separate from the E150/350's which first offered a 351W in 1975.

Examples ~ Front Motor Mounts

80/81 F150/350; U150 ~ E0TZ-6038-C .. Engine Mount ~ with 4WD ~ Before 6/1/81.

80/86 F150/350; U150 ~ E4TZ-6038-H .. Engine Mount ~ 2WD Only

I can't scan my Ford microfiche slides, but your local Ford dealer will have the same info...either on a CD, printed catalog, or microfiche.
