headers and exhaust

am going to change the stock exhaust on my 04 5.4L 3 valve screw F150. was planning on edelbrock 1 5/8 ceramic shorties, h pipe, no cats and flowmaster 50 series mufflers. are headers worth the extra money? 3 factors being increased power, fuel mileage and sound. all i've ever done before were performance cars and the headers made a huge difference. also noticed a lot of people on here suggesting magnaflow over flowmaster. do they sound better? i am new to this site and new to upgrading trucks, so any insight would be appreciated

i noticed a few people replacing the muffler with straight pipe. does that sound good? it would obviously be the cheapest option. was looking at spending prob $1500 to do headers, h pipe and dual mufflers. but the cheaper the better obviously. also i have been told that i would have to get an h pipe custom made. true?

Everything I have read here suggests that staying with a single-out exhaust maintains the engines low end torque. Other have stated that a Magnaflow SIDO catback systems sounds great. I am beginning to think that it is truly the owners preference and that very few exhaust mods on these trucks make a difference to power or MPGs, just the sound.

I have heard comments to the gist of 'making an engine breath better in and out only raises the power band', I agree with this notion. Most tend to suggest gears and a tuner to get a performance feel from thier trucks.

If you are going to install headers make sure they are long tube instead of the shorties. It took me 9 hrs to remove the old and install the headers.

You will get better torque out of the long tubes, after I installed mine I was at 255tq on the dyno at the rear wheels.

I had them pull the muffler and turn the exhaust down right behind the axle and I love the way mine sounds. The problem with pipes it seems like unless you spend a ton of money on them they rust out and mounts are always busting. I like the look of mine were you see no pipes and it sounds great.

also, would i see any gain in power or mileage from running without a muffler? that wouldn't negatively affect my backpressure or anything would it?

It is 5.4 and it is not very loud at all compared to guys I know with dodges and chevys with straight pipes. As far as mileage goes it does not help around town because I love making noise but I have an edge and leveling kit and if I am not bucking a head wind I will get 17 mpg at interstate speeds and if I just stick around 55 mph my computer says 23 mpg. This on a Screw Lariat 3.73's stock 18's.

I have added a Magnaflow muffler and 3 inch pipe from the Y back since my dyno tune. I should have a chance to dyno it again in about 2 weeks to see if it made any real difference. My seat of the pants says that it bumped up the low end torque a bit. It cost me $450 installed at a local muffler shop.

I still say that the best bang for the buck is a tuner, with my preference being the Diablosport Predator.
