I have a 2001 Ford F250 4wd with a gas 5.4 liter V8. I am trying to put an amateur radio in it, but the spark plug noise is fearsome. To reduce it, I would like to shield the ignition. I understand that this design uses COP ignition (coil over plug). Getting to these things looks like a nightmare. Has anyone done this before or can offer any suggestions? Thanks.
Make a resistor capacitor circuit for the powere wires and put ferrite rings over the
power and antenna wires, You might try the snap on ferrite rings for the coil leads http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/index...ferrite&Page=1
They really do cut a lot of noise if you look around you will see them on alot of power
cords especially for computers they are inside amplifiers so if you have some junk electronice laying around you may have what you need, But they are cheap if you
have to buy them. Get those snap ones and if you have the wire length double the
wire through them to get double the noise canceling and put them close to the actual
component that is being powered by the wire, For the ant you will want it close to
the radio.
I have wired the transceiver directly to the battery and put ferrite rings over both the power wires and coax to the antenna. I have bonded the hood & doors to the frame. I will try adding ferrites to the coil wires. I can't double the length of wire as the wires come out of a wire loom and directly to the coils - very short. I am trying to shield all the coils with 3m 1180 copper tape. The radio is a Yaesu FT 857D and the noise blanker works pretty well, but I really want to stop the noise at its source. Thanks for the help!
