Does anybody remember the specific vehicles affected by this recall? Reason I ask is I took the cruise control switch off my '01 to use on my '96 and wanted to make sure I wasn't in danger of burning it up. My '01 is a v6 reg cab flareside 2wd 5 spd sport package no power windows or locks or mirrors factory tape player has A/C and obviously c/c. I think I hit everything. Let me know. I bought the truck new and no for sure I never had the recall done.
On edit: The part I used was the switch that threads into the master cylinder.
As far as I know, they re-released the recall. I've been seeing everything from 93' crown vics, to exploders, f-150's and E150's.
If your worried about your truck, just unhook the harness from the brake switch and tape it off. You won't have any cruise control, but at least you won't have any fire dangers... Thats how they are performing the recalls as of now, being the harness won't be available until January.
I checked the recalls section. The reason I took the switch off my '01 was so that I could use the cruise on my '96. Is it actually the switch on the master cylinder that heats up and causes fire? or the switches on the steering wheel?
The switch/sensor on the master leaks. The brake fluid eats through the switch/sensor and causes a short to ground and the wires overheat and start a fire(brake fluid is flamable).
Yeah I just called my dealer and they confirmed this. They also said there is a simple fix, 5 or 6 bucks, it's like a fusible link that is a plug-in mod, and prevents the fire from happening. I think I'll go ahead and do this so I can have cruise control.
It should be free, all recalls are free. I took my truck in to get it done when i got my truck. I called the day before, scheduled an appointment, and took the truck to the dealership. While they worked on it, I looked around the huge lot at all the cool king ranches, mustangs, etc. It took them about 2 hrs, i believe. They also checked the rest of the truck out too( they checked my brakes, fluids, etc.)
it's free when you have it done. however. I am using the switch from the 2001 on a 96 F350 so when I ask to get my recall fixed on my 01 F150 and my 96 F350 diesel dually rolls into the shop they might ask questions. For $5 I'll avoid the hassle.
You can't get the recall done for another 2 months. All they will do is unplug and tape off the harness to the switch, thus disabling your cruise. At least out dealership here can't get them until sometime in January..
I just got the recall(well i did it with the parts they sold me for the reasons stated above) It's just a plug in fuse that plugs into the switch and the pigtail and burns the fuse if there is ever a short. No parts are changed on the truck, this is just added.
I know what they do, I do it myself(I'm a ford tech at a local dealership). What I'm saying is they went and recalled so many cars they ran out of harnesses to install. They are on backorder until January unless a dealership was lucky enough to order ALOT early on and still has some....
And yes, parts have been changed on trucks/cars. The brake switch that the harness is meant to protect is inspect for fluid leaks. If the switch/sensor is leaking, it is replaced with a new one.
i just had it performed the other day...pulled in...showed them the letter i got in the mail and they did it in the parking lot while he printed off the invoice...by the time i was done signing the sheet to state it was getting fixed the recall had be done and i walked back out the door again.
