Question need wiring help!

I have a '05 F-150 and have a plug-n-go Sirius radio plugged into the power outlet. By accident, I have left it on 2 times within the past two wks. How can I change the power outlet from being live all the time to only being live when the key is on? I'm afraid that if I leave the radio on again the battery will run down as I do not use the truck every day. Please give detailed instructions, as wiring is something I am not too familiar with.............Thanks for all your help!

Need wiring help

You will need a 12 Volt Outlet (to plug your radio adapter into, never wire a Sirius Radio directly to 12V). Install a Mini-Fuse adapter (Buss Fuse BP/HHH this converts the fuse into 2 fusible circuits) to location #22(this is a delayed power accessory for audio) on the fuse panel (info is on pages 226-227 of the Owner's Manual). These should be available at any Auto Parts Store. You probably will have to cut a small slot in the fuse panel cover for the wire. Then install your Outlet below the fuse panel. I just wire-tied mine to a cable bundle and installed the ground wire below the panel.

If it were me I would go buy a cigarette lighter adapter. It looks like a cig. lighter and has two wires coming off the end, + and -. I would wire the + into the switched wire behind the radio and ground the negative, then plug the Sirius cig. adapter into it(leave it behind the dash) and run the plug (the end that plugs into the unit) out from behind the dash and be done. That way it will turn on and off without the vehicle and majority of the wires will be somewhat hidden.

Also, side note, some Sirius units (last years models) are 12v and you can cut the cig. plug off wire them up directly. It will say on the back of the unit. They are using to 5 and 6volt now.

Just to clarify what might not be clear; theS irius radio plugs into the 12V power outlet with a cigarette lighter like plug. The problem is that the 12V power outlet is always on, so if I don't turn the Sirius radio unit off it will stay on when I leave the truck. What I want to know is how to make the 12V power outlet turn off when I shut the truck off so I don't accidentally run the battery down. Thanks for your help!

most sirius radios have a timer that you can set for the radio to a auto shut down if the radio has'nt been touched.

944x4ranger, Thanks for your help! I didn't know about the auto shutdown feature on the Sirius radio. Read the manual for the radio, and the model I have does have that feature, so I enabled it. After one hour it will turn itself off. Thanks again for your help!

that way your radio does not lose its channel memory if you only shut the truck off to run in to the store for a minute or two.
