I have a '97 F-150 4X4 Lariat 4.6. I just purchased a 30' camper that weighs 5800# dry. The truck pulls the camper but it seems like it is constantly straining. I want to boost the horses - does anyone know what my best option would be? I am considering a chip, exhaust and heads as long as my tranny will hold up.

if you can afford it man go for a supercharger, it'll give ya more horsepower and torque. If not a good exhaust and air filter will help.

Hey Horseman you might also try a cold air intake, a new mass airflow sensor, headers. They are all pretty readily available for the 4.6 and would be a cheaper place to start than a turbo, and yet they would work very nicely with a turbo if you still wanted one.

Horseman,

I also have a 97 F150, 4.6L....... I have a Gibson Side Swept cat-back exhaust, Gibson shorty headers, Bassani high flow cats and Air Raid Intake system. As for the transmission, R470W. I have pulled my camper (5000lbs/24ft) from coast to coast through the mountains etc. Never had a problem with anything, I do have a B&M Trans Pan which is finned aluminum and holds 3 additional quarts of tranny fluid. I use Mobile 1 Synthetic fluid..... The first mods I would recommend is a low restriction intake system and a cat-back exhaust system. Do some research here at this web site and read what others say about the mods and get the one that most of the readers have installed and say good thinks about! The only mod I would change on mine is the intake system, based on reader inputs, the Air Force One is better than most. As for the Gibson Side Swept exhause, it fit perfectly in the factory hangers and is not much louder than stock and it exits behind the wheel, not in front of the right rear wheel.... Have Fun!!
