Hello Fellows, My son and I are in process of of pulling the engine out of a '81 250. We have removed the do-dads, who-dads, and most of the hoe-dads. Pretty straight forward stuff so far. When I get down to the block I am going to be winging it. Any tips on getting that sucker out? We are are installing a new longblock. Have forklift and engine stand. Thanks, and Happy Holidays. whoof, Dog
Pull the hood & the radiator, & protect the condenser coil with at least 1/2" plywood. Remove the 2 nuts from the bottom of the engine perches (1 ea side) and leave the mounts attached to the block until it's out. Use anti-seize lube on EVERYTHING when you're reassembling the engine - you'll thank me in a few years when you want to pull the exhaust manifolds or replace the water pump. Gasket prep spray is also nice. Make sure you torque the carb studs or it'll rock & give you a phantom vacuum leak. In fact, skip the carb & put EFI in there:

Advice mostly. Just trying to get a game plan established. Seems like sometimes on these kind of things I take apart the wrong things and make it harder than necessary. Will start unbolting today which may lead to more specific questions.
I hve the intake and exhaust manifold off. I have EFI exhaust manifolds. I trial fit EFI's and found they need some grinding and modifying to fit in with the stock intake manifold. Also, do the mounting tabs on the two manifolds have to be the same thickness? It doesn't appear that the stock ones are.
Thanks, Dog
Attach one end of the chain to the intake/exhaust bolt hole right near where the carb was, and the other end to the bolt hole where the coil was mounted, high on the head, and forward of the distributor. take all but the lower two bolts out from the bellhousing-block connection, and remove the nuts from the mounts. Lift the engine until the mount studs are a bit clear of the perches, and then jack up the tranny. remove the last two bolts from the bellhousing, and slip the motor forward, and lift it out.
Yes, the mounting tabs should be the same thickness. The clamp bolts work by their washers applying pressure to the tabs, so if one is significantly thinner, the washer will **** & allow the thin one to slip/warp/move.
There are people here with more experience in using EFI ex.mans. with carbed engines, and this is a good site, too:

Got the engine out the hatch and on the floor. Not a bad job with the right tools, etc. The engine mounts are 3/4" nuts(2), 6, 5/8" bolts around top of transmission and two small 1/2" around bottom. I hooked chain to head bolts but like idea for chaining suggested earlier in this thread for returning engine. Support transmission with floor jack. I lifted front of engine first and pulled engine out of transmission. It is heavy. Boat anchor is good description. Thanks fellows for the help and moral support! Dog
