I have an 88 bronco 5.0L fuel injection. my problem is the my son replaced the lower and upper gaskets of the intake manifolds. when it was time to remove the distributor he made no markings for the re-install? so now, I had to put my hands in it.
What I did was pulled the #1 plug and hand cranked the engine until the piston was at the top of cylinder I then set the rotor to point to the #1 wire on the cap. set the dist in place and it started. and now has no power. I was wondering if I was suppose to set the #1 piston to bottom of cylinder??? It'been a long time don't remember. I don't remember if I should put mt thumb over the plug hole until I feel pressure pushing out then set the rotor to #1 position....HELP

Been there, done that. Fun isn't it?
You will want #1 on its compression stroke when setting the timing. Like you said earlier, place your hand, thumb, whatever over the hole for #1 and have someone crank till you feel it compress. When that's done, set the rotor to point at the #1 ignition wire on the cap.
Now you said it runs but has no power. The timing needs to be set at *10 BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). To do this you'll need to un-plug the SPOUT connector. You can find a picture of it here which should help. http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=71 . If it's not in that spot then it is on the wiring harness that plugs into the distributor. Once you have that un-plugged, you'll need a timing light to set it 10*. Once that is done plug the SPOUT connector back in and it should start running better. Hope this helps.
You might wanna just start the compression stroke, then use the TDC mark on the balancer to get to TDC (as long as you can still see it). Might be easier than trying to eyeball the piston.
If it started, ya gotta be close. If it were me, I'd try to set the timing like Moore558 said before I messed with pulling the dist back out. It'll run like total crap if the base timing is retarded.
Timing light works best to get the exact timing for the distributor with the spout unconnected. I know it seems obvious to state it but just putting it out there.
ok...here is what I did: I removed the #1 plug put my thumb over the hole had someone crank it till i felt pressure pushing on my thumb, i then stopped cranking. I then used a breaker bar to bring the piston up TDC I then aligned the rotor pointing to the #1 wire on cap hand tightened the hold down bolt and started it. still out of time had to turn dist all the way to the right couldn't turn anymore then it started.
Let me ask this? once I feel the compression stroke should I then turn the engine by hand until 10* shows on point. then point the rotor to the #1 wire ???
OK, I got the timing right on 10* BTDC had to purchase a timing light.
Now I have another problem, Tapping? but not all the time. here's what happens. sometimes it will tap at idol, and when driving. at Idol the oil pressure gauge will read low when accelerating the gauge will rise to normal.
How do you tell if it's oil pressure switch or oil pump is bad? or could the filter be clogged?
Thanks
Al
