As of last night, my truck feels like it's floating on air (smooth) and then suddenly you'd think "man, this road surface SUCKS...don't they ever re-surface in ___________??" Insert name of state. And then as instantly as it went bad, it's completely gone and it feels like a brand new road surface.
Then, after you've been driving a while you start thinking, "man, not just the interstate, but ALL of their roads are terrible!"... LOL
So eventually I figured out it's my truck and not the road. It's just weird it can drive so smoothly then feel like you hit rumble strips... then go back to smooth driving a couple of seconds later...
Any ideas? Tires are a couple months old. Complete ball joint job at same time as new tires. Steering's been a bear ever since then, but haven't had any down time to have it looked at. Has felt like my steering has a mind of its own.
when i had tires put on the guy said 181..i found it hard to believe so i asked here..i think it was Alan that said that was right..hmmmm i better look deeper..thanks Kris..
Sounds like the front bearing units going bad if it sounds like you're driving on rumble strips. Put it in 4wd and see if it goes away. If it does, then get ready for a hub replacement or two....
I'm still going with the hub assemblies. If it disappears as mysteriously as it appears, then that's my vote. If it was the U-joint and/or carrier bearing the sound wouldn't really disappear at all.... just get worse upon acceleration and speed.
Put your truck in 4wd, get out and try to turn the front knuckles by hand. If they don't move, you're in 4. If they do, then your esof isn't working correctly. I'm assuming you have the switch on the dash to switch into 2wd/4hi/4lo.
Lug nuts are technically 150 ft-lbs. Says right on the side of the washer nut.
Yes, that's the correct number. I never let anyone use an air gun when I get new tires on either the truck or 5er, I follow the guy around with my own toque wrench, and tighten them myself.
May sound crazy to you guys but the steering dampner went bad on a jeep i used to have and it felt the same way, almost caused me to wreck once. just a thought.
An update for you guys...it's in the shop and I'm supposed to hear from them this morning re: what's going on. I'll post in a little while. Thanks for all the help.
By the way, one of the things I asked them to quote is labor (I already bought the part) on replacing my auto-shifter. The piece on the end with the OD button broke off and is just hanging by the wire. Can you say how involved it would be for me to drop the collumn and replace it myself? A guy that works at a Ford shop told me there's not much to it, but I don't want to get in over my head.
