hi. i just bought a 78 f250 w/a 460 and the wiring is a mess i have a slow power draw and i want to replace it all . so i was wondering whats the best way to go on about to do that? thnx
Get a factory schematic and restore everything to stock first.
Then replace the harnesses under the hood with new weathertight connectors and color coded wires. Plus, I wrap stickers around the wires indicating what they are used for and cover the stickers with clear tape.
The wiring in your truck is pretty simple and so is the fuse box (8 fuses?). Process of elimination should get it done in short order.
Since the flashers supply the voltage to many systems, I would start with the flasher that ties into the brake light. Your brake light switch might be staying on sometimes or the flasher is nuked.
Re-wiring an older vehicle isn't that difficult. There are several companies that make generic wiring harnesses. I use "It's a Snap," "Easy Wiring," and Ron Francis wiring. These harnesses come with everything needed, horn relays, window relays, a/c, etc., and the wires are marked as to where they go. They are also inexpensive. The last Its a Snap I used was $160 bucks.
Of course there is always "Painless Wiring," original harnesses, but damn, they are extremely proud of them.
An added bonus is that you can clean up the wiring and make it look really good. jd

They have marine rated tinned wire and Mil-spec wire use that if you plan on keeping the truck for a long time the marine rated would take along time to corrode on land!! http://www.sherco-auto.com/cg.htm These guys have factory type waterproof
wiring connectors redo them all with these and never have a water related problem
unless you park in a lake!!
