Vin Decoded
I have a 72 Sport Custom SWB and the vin number is F17YLP84725. Take is what i found on drivers door. Along with 155 VM F170 F8 C H2 04450 157 4000 24. When i got it the title and tag is the only numbers i could find. I haven't got to the ones on frame yet to see if they are the same. It was also set up for a 302 and shifter on floor which was done by other owner. Any help would be nice thanks.

Thanks and it was my error it does say 115 and not 155. Anyway thanks alot for the info. I'm restoreing it with different years for my likeings. I've just picked up a 71 Ranger cab with the chrome trim on rain drip. I'm going to put the pointed F100 markers on hood. I've got along ways to go yet but the trucks worth it. Thanks again for info.

i have no idea what my ratio is. i'm at about 2900 rmps at 70mph though which i cant complain about.

I see you say thats it is rare to have a short wheel base cab and chassis. Saying that it is a cab and chassis means that it was just a cab on a chassis and no bed of any sort. It has a styleside short bed that came with it when i purchased it. I'm not changeing the truck i just like alot of chrome so i've added different pieces. I got the 71 Ranger cab because the cab thats on it now has alot of rust in floor. I have bought new panels floor and cab mounts to weld but this other is a whole better shape and not only is there alot of rust the other owner had cut out the roof and put in a sun roof which is not factory and is dry rotted. Its one of those unscrew and pop up.

463,241 F100's were made in 1972...only 2,461 were Cab & Chassis. That's about 1/2 of a percent of the total F100's made. There's no breakdown of short and long wheelbases on these models, but I doubt that many shorties were made.
Series Code is F170, and that translates to a Cab & Chassis...no bed was behind the cab. I was surprised myself, as that's the shortest Cab & Chassis I've seen on an F100 here on FTE. I've decoded VIN's from 1960's F250 and F350's with the short wheelbase, but never an F100 till now. The production figures came from: The Standard Catalog of Light Duty Ford Trucks (krause.com ISBN:0-87349-411-3)

Interesting read, Bill you have me wondering, what is he supposed to do with this very rare find now that he is armed with the info? Can he sell it for more than the truck is worth any where else?
2nd question what would one do with a half ton cab/chassis?

I got it for $400.00 in Live Oak Florida. It was just sitting in a barn as a chicken coop. I asked if he wanted to sell it. He said $400.00 so i asked if there was a title to it. The tag matches the title numbers so i bought it. I was just looking for a 67 to 72 SWB F100 truck. I've always admired the short bed style side. I guess i was in the right spot at right time. The seam is in great shape along with the seam in the hood. About every one i've seen is rusted in the seam or filled in with bondo. I plan on filling it in with lead. It had a 302 4 speed he said but it was taken out. He had cut out the roof for a sun roof but it looks to leak bad there. I got another cab that is a 71 Ranger and is in great shape. It has the chrome around the lip of roof and rear window.
