If you get one from a smallblock (4.9/5.0/5.8), it'll fit. You didn't mention your current trans, but just compare your truck to the donor for x-member location & maybe buy the driveshafts off it, too.

madza trans with a going bad 2nd gear
It is a direct drop in replacement for the M5OD.
The ZF is a heavy-duty 5-speed manual, with a low (5:1 range) syncro'ed first gear, and a decent (.74:1) overdrive. It uses an internal slave, that is a little different than the Mazda one, but will plug into the same line.
A few things to consider. You MAY have to either change the x member or do a little fabrication, if you get a ZF make sure you get everything along with it (shifter, rear flange etc) you may have to re work the tranny cover on the floorboard, the driveshaft may have to be lengthened or shortened. IF all goes well more than likely a step joint will be needed to connect the tranny and driveshaft. ZF's were F250 and F350 (with rare exception)thus a larger u joint.
Good luck. Changed a T18 to a ZF and never looked back. Weigh the cost of the ZF (if rebuilt there is a core charge and always shipping)vs rebuilding the mazda.
The ZF uses an external slave, not an internal, but, like Ford_SIX said, it will hook up to the same line. Evan

From everything I have read on this forum I am pretty much sold on a ZF transmission. I am desperate for overdrive and I REALLY like the granny in my current T18.
I understand I need a ZF from a 300/302/351 but what vehicles and years did the ZF come in? I understand F250's and heavier rigs but what model years?
If I go to my local junk yard and ask for a ZF from behind a 300/302/351 will they have a clue what I am talking about? This is for my 2wd '67 F100 with a 3.54 dana 60 that is not my daily driver so a rebuilt is way out of my budget.
Some M5ODs had external; some internal (concentric) slaves. Some 1/2-tons got the ZF.
If a reman ZF is "way out" of your budget, a used one won't be much closer - they range from $800-1300. Any junkyard will know exactly what a Ford fullsize truck ZF is (ZF makes LOTS of transmissions for LOTS of brands & types of vehicles), but don't expect to find many yards that HAVE ONE IN STOCK. You're a little better off since you're looking for a 2WD, but they're still rare.
Well, call me names and beat me silly... I haven't seen a SB ZF, just a BB/Diesel version....
Oh well

F-250 HD's and F-350's with the 351 had them for sure. Then there's the super rare F-150 with one...
