My 2000 F-150 XLT 4x4 currently has 72,000 miles on it. The Yellow ABS light is not on when I first start the truck, but then comes on within a minute. Fluid is full and pads are still good. I do most of my own work, so I am looking for directions of what to look at and how I can test the parts.
Been through this one before, could be any of the following and more (the more senor users can tell you).
ABS Sensor (Front left or rights), $150
Rear ABS sensor (leaast expensive $18
ABS Modulator ( I hear it rare) $500 , $200 rebuilting yours
I would recomment putting a multipmeter on the Fron ABS sensors to test, the forum users here taught me that and I had a bad front passanger one. Many post on how to do this. Are you having any ill effects on ABS if not it couls be a front bearing that the sensors read from.
"comes on in less than 1 minute" did you move yet, or still setting in the drive way. right after startup, the computer checks to see if the sensors have continuity, if not , the light comes on. if it stays off for a minute, then comes on when you start moving, the sensor wires are connected, but probably not pickiing up the signal. you get a new sensor when you buy a front hub/bearing. sensor alone should not be $150?
Does it happen when you accelerate? I just fixed this problem and it hasn't come on since. Fix: speed sensor on differential. $30. Cheaper than a diagnostic.
The light is off when I first start the truck, but comes on within 30 seconds. It never goes off while the key is on or the engine is running. What code should I look for and is there a list of codes to explain what is wrong.
Go to a Ford Dealer to have the ABS system scanned.
If you have 4 wheel ABS, the Front Sensors, (Motorcraft Brand) are about $50 from Rock Auto and rear about $20.
The plastic seperating the permanate Magnets disinagrates due to heat and road grime and messes up the signal. Note that the replacement unit has a thick plastic flange vs a thin metal flange on my '97 F150. I had to get a longer screw/bolt to hold the unit to the steering knuckle, it is metric.
