something similar happened a few years ago in iraq, someone backed a tank into a tree and under some branches and set the remote operable machine gun off and killed one US soldier.
do not remember specifics of the event, i would imagine that those things would have a safety interlock on it but would probably have been disengaged in the battle field setting.
stuff does happen but can just imagine how many lives in combat the things do save.
