Ever since I got my truck....(1976 LWB F100 2X4) it has been very rattly under the cab ( Metal on Metal rattle )....mainly over small to medium continous bumps....I believe it to be the exhaust as it is very dodgy and the header pipes rest on the crossmember....but I wired them up today off the cross member but the noise was still there.
I got underneath it with a dead blow hammer and tapped around and it the only noise I could get that was similar was from the Radius Arms....but it was hard to tell....could it be the Radius Arms...or has someone had similar noises from there front end.
It is very rattley....it steers striaght and has no knocks when driving up and down anything....only when driving on moderately bump roads. ( Nothing rediculous just standard country asphalt road!!!
If the 2WD is like the 4WD, then the rubber bushings on the end of the radius arm (positioned on each side of the radius arm bracket) may be worn out. This was the case on my '78 4WD, and it was doing the exact same thing that you are describing.
In addition to checking the radius arm bushings, check the shock absorber bushings. Check some obvious things also, like cab mounts, fender, grille, bumper, hood, etc. hardware. Some of these rattles can be very tough to chase down!..
