I'm getting a low rumble/ vibration when accelerating through 45-55 mph, then it's gone. I can make it stop during acceleration by letting off on the gas pedal and immediately pressing it down again with just a bit more Oomph. Am I right in thinking I have U-joint problems or is it something with the rear differential?
That is your driveline harmonic!! If you hold it around 46mph with no acceleration or
deceleration it should be most noticable and loud. If it is louder than normal or it is
growing to a bigger mph spread then it is a sign the U-joints are going. Most people don't hear it because they accelerte too fast through the harmonic or they have the
radio too loud!! Try shooting some white lithium in the double cardan joint it might
be that it is dry at least you will rule it out.
I had a similar problem on my '92 a few years ago. I had to have the pin yoke cut off the driveline and replaced. Ran about $150 including new U-joints and rebalancing.
