Does anyone know how to disengage AWD on the 02 mountaineer/explorers?

I wouldn't do that. You could mess with the transfer case...

I have done it on one of my trucks, the T/C freewheels on the front, there is no load on it with the shaft out.

The converter senses no turning of the output and sends signals to the computer to do whatever.....AWD systems are funny that way..

I think it depends on how the AWD system works (and I do not know how it is setup on the '02 explorers). On ones like my 97 the system does not use the computer at all to split the power or move it around (no electronically controlled clutches or anything) just a limited slip transfer case and also a limited slip diff in the back. So if you pulled the shaft on my 97 it would not matter to it. But, I am not sure if that also applies to the '02.

After looking at the electrical drawing it looks like you may be able to remove the driveshaft... You still would be spinning the front diff and axles.. Maybe worth a try..
