I'm getting ready to put my engine back together.. Anybody know why I shouldn't use Stainless Allenhead bolts? Putting this thing back together and was looking at the bolt bin. Thinking Hmmm..
Hi,I investigated the stainless route for my 4.9. Stainless bolts are only equal to a grade 2.5 ( 1= soft 12= hard) on the bolt scale. Grade 5 is what is used on most vehicles for general purposes. Grade 7 and above are used in high stress applications, clutch bolts , fan bolts etc. I found a company that sells chrome plated grade 5 and above bolts, nuts and washers and others. Cost about $70 , to do the engine.
Just like regular carbon steel bolts, stainless also has several different grades. You may be able to use a 400 series S/S and still have the same strength as a grade 5(Your neighbor hood hardware store usually has 18-8 S/S, which is the same as a 300 series. Higher the number the better). 400 series S/S will be very hard to come by at the hardware store and very expensive, put if you are interested you can contact your local Fastenal (www.fastenal.com), Grainger, McMaster Car or Lawson dealers for tech specs on 400 S/S.
