I would like to poll what the typical ORIGINAL alternator lifespan is on the escape (2001-2004). I believe mine has just died at under 50,000 miles. I found a few places where people mentionned their alternators all dying around that mileage.
mine could be dead right now, 42,000 miles, if it is then Ford planned it just right, as soon as warranty expires, buncha ******. We've had all sorts of vehicles over 100,000 miles and no alternator problems. This is way too early for alternators to die, I hope there is some aftermarket replacements, no sense putting a ford one back in if not necessary and they crap out that early.
I don't know if there's one answer to that. I've had some that outlasted the vehicle - 200K+ miles. Are the newer ones built cheaper than the older ones? Possibly, everyone is shaving pennies where ever they can. Could they/would they build an alternator that will only last the life of the warranty? That seems a little short sighted...
I'll add data points for my current vehicles (see the list in my sig) all of these still have the original alternators: 97 250 - 110K, 97 Ranger - 80K, Escape - 80K, Mustang - 51K

Reason: add milage
Theses alternators use a some what weak diode system. Constant battery drain below 10.9 volts kills the small diodes. So if you are a short trip multiple engine start kind of driver the alternators won't last long.
