Concern with oil change

I just changed my oil today for the first time with the Fumoto Valve. Truck was parked on flat ground, and all I got out of it was a little over 12 qts. When I refilled it, it took a little over 12 qts. Since I put in as much as I took out, I don't think it was running low, especially since I just checked it 2 weeks ago and it was fine. Has anybody else had this problem? Is that the way it is because of the way the valve is designed? Thanks!

The valve won't affect anything, except it drains a little slower. Didn't you check the dipstick before/after the oil change?

how thick are the oil pans? with the fumoto it has however much of the threaded part sticking up into the oil pan still while plus is fully removed, could be that there is a little bit left over there because of that

How long did you let it drain? Was it hot or warm oil at least? Did you pop the oil filter cap and let that drain down 1st?

Where on the dipstick is "ok" for you?

12 qts is low from what I've had in my OCs...

I didn't check the oil before I changed it, but 2 weeks ago it was about a 1/3 of the way between MIN and MAX, and right now to the best I can tell (hard to see with the new clean oil), it is pretty close to the same mark. Engine had been run before I changed it, but it wasn't up to operating temperature. I "loosened" the oil filter cap before I started draining, but I didn't completely take it off as it says not to. Could it have been I just didn't loosen it far enough, and it was still holding some in the filter housing? It drained for probably around 30 minutes.

That's my guess. The spring valve won't open until you loosen the cap all the way.

Where's it say not to remove the filter cap? I take mine completely off every change and put a new filter in.

In the oil change instructions in the tech folder it says "Loosen the engine oil filter cap but do not completely remove yet." before you start draining.

Bingo -- if you just uncrewed it a bit, it'll still hold the oil up there. At what point did you change the filter? Was it before you finished draining, or had you closed the valve already? 30 minutes is fine w/o the fumoto, someone with more experience would have to say if that's enough using one. I think it takes 15-20 minutes for "cool" oil to drain down to the sump on a just-run 6.0 engine...

I closed the valve already and then I took the filter out. I changed the filter after I put the drain plug back in (before the fumoto) last time I changed my oil, and didn't have any problems. Apparently I didn't unscrew the filter cap far enough this time.

That'd be my guess, and in any case, I wouldn't worry too much this time around. I plan my OC for after I've driven the truck awhile, unscrew my filter cap 1st until it pops up under the spring pressure and just leave it that way, then put my 5 gallon bucket underneath and pull the plug. Go have a beer (if you trust yourself to put it all back ok ) -- or just chill and do something else for an hour. Heck I've let it go all night! Then I put on the new filter and o-ring, drain plug and start counting the gallons as they go back in. I keep my empties nearby so I don't lose count (not that I've ever done THAT, mind you! ).

You'll get more out next time....

Thanks for the tip....I was kinda worried when I only got 12 out....hoping it wasn't really that low, and knowing it couldn't be since I just checked it. Then when it only took 12 when I refilled, I felt better but was still curious as to why I didn't get all 13 1/2 +/- back out. Now I know! Thanks again guys!
