oil filter attachment?

Maybe a dumb question, but...
I have a 1963 223 6 cyl.
I just rebuilt the engine, but I didn't touch the area where the oil filter attaches to the engine...there's a circular thing with 'top' labeled and 'this side out'

After installing the engine it runs excellent, but I have a real bad leak coming out of this area. I tried to unscree this circular area from the engine to replace the gasket there, but ended up stripping the nut that holds it.

Am I doing something wrong here, is this a reverse trhead thing or is it just extremely tight?

Thanks for any help.

JAcob

There is an attached picture of the thing I speak of.

I don't know the answer to your question. I have not worked on a truck like yours that was that old but......
I notice you are using a Fram filter. From all the tests I've read they are not very good. Lots of advertising but in real life a poor filter.
Wix and AC are both easy to get and much better. Hope someone else has the answer to the leak problem. After all, dirty oil is still much better than NO oil, eh? )

Lynn.

It is probably an adapter for a spin on filter. I would try to get it off and get a new one. you may be able to make a new gasket and re-use it.
the old filters had a bolt running through a housing that held the filter element or a similar setup.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I finally got it off tonight. It took an eazy out and 2 people crankin on it, so it ruined the threads, but it's out and I'll get another one tomorrow.

This pic was a pre-overhaul icture, so there is now a better oil filter going on it.

Thanks again

Any oil filter but a FRAM! I recommend using a "FILTER PLUS" oil filter magnet on top of that new oil filter to get "metal particles" out of your engine oil. Your oil filter probably will not capture or filter out particles smaller than 15 microns. At least, the oil filter magnet and a good magnetic oil drain plug will catch those smaller metallic particles that your oil filter misses.

I have a 223 in my 61 Unibody and you most definitely had a spin-on oil filter adapter. I've never changed over to a spin-on filter and I'm not sure if I will. As long as the Wix paper filters are still available I might just stick with them. If I was going to change to a spin-on I'd go with a K&N oil filter. I know some people think you're paying more just for the name but everything I've ever heard and read about them is that they're an excellent oil filter and I run the K&N air filters in all my vehicles and have been very pleased with K&N overall. Of course I'm also a diehard Mobil 1 fan too. Good luck.

I used to run the Wix or Napa filters, which are the same thing, but I run just Motorcrafts now. I figure, if they are made to Ford's specs, have the oval on them, then they are probably just right for my Ford.
