Power mirror gremlins

The driver's power mirror on my 'new' pickup also appears to be possessed by a demon. Instead of up/down & in/out functions the 'joy stick' seems to send the mirror on diagonal routes that never end up where I need it. The mirror moves in each switch position, just not appropriately. Out of frustration I just manually push the mirror into position. Does this sound like any known problem? Its aggravating, like a pair of wires are crossed.

An upgrade I'd like to install are the signal power mirrors. Still unsure if the wire harness in the door has the connections needed to allow 'bolt on' installation of Lariat mirrors? Also don't know if the mirror shells are interchangeable to deal with PITA of color matching. Think the signal mirrors are cute.

I have the same problem on my driver side mirror. The cause is that when you move the mirror by hand it will slip out of the track that moves it and will move cockeyed. You just need to move the mirror by hand until is it corresponding to the track. On eway to do this is to move the joystick all the way down, then push the mirror all the way down. It would then sit properly and should be able to move like it is supposed to. Repeat for the sides.
As far as turn signal mirrors, you will need to run wires from each your front turn signals through the firewall's rubber gromet to left and below the brake booster. Then the driver side wire should go up into the dash and through another gromet next to the door hinge, into the door and up into the mirror. Same for thr passenger side. It's a lot of work because you will need to take apart the dash and both door panels. Good luck.

I have heard many reports of power mirror issues stemming from the mirror switch itself. From what I have heard the contacts get dirty or corroded and it will not send the proper commands to the mirror. I would try replacing the mirror switch (or removal, dissassembly and cleaning if possible) and give it a shot. I'd be leery of manually moving it too much as you might damage the gear/motor assembly. Here is a quote from another thread about adding the signal mirrors - looks like you can replace the mirror glass and add a couple wires rather than change out the whole thing. Hope that helps.

Drakula I'm glad to read your post. I've owned three fords and all have failed mirrors. I thought it was just ford engineering.
I'll go give your fix a try on my 97, here's hoping....

These '98 F-150 power mirrors seem to work the same way my '92 E-150 mirrors do. There is no "track" so to speak to "slip out" of, nor is there an "all the way down" on the "joystick".

The mirror is supported by an X set up like a U-joint & moved by 2 screws that are driven in/out by motor powered captive nuts. There are no limits on the position of these captive nuts, they keep right on spinning as long as you hold the joystick & will simply 'click' when they lose grip at the end of the mirror's articulation. The mirror position limits are established by contact inside the mirror's shell.

I can hear what sounds like both motors spinning intermittently, when I presume just a single motor should be running-suggesting joystick issues. Also suspect that crud on the fine threads of the mirror jacking screws may be interfering.

I get that problem everytime after a carwash when someone wipes my mirrors. All I do is just move the mirror by hand, yes you're right there is no track so to speak, but the mirror does pop into the right position and the joystick moves it like it's supposed to. You just need to catch it in the right spot. I just checked it in my truck to make sure I'm not an idiot, my mirrors works perfectly. I guess just move the mirror up/down, move the joystick to make sure the mirror moves fine. Once you get that down, repeat for the sides. Hope this helps, if it doesn't then I guess you have a different problem from mine.
